Haemagological Times has this month published a couple of research articles examining ways to improve control of Graft Versus Host Disease (GVHD), the potentially deadly risk associated with bone marrow transplants, where T-Lymphocytes produced from the donor's transplanted bone marrow attack the transplant patient's cells. Both techniques modify the donor T - cells in an extension of CAR-T technology:
Unfortunately these solutions look expensive, due to the personalised medicine nature of the procedures. It is encouraging though in that trials are being done to prove the concept. With all the research going into trying to make CAR-T technology generic rather than specific to each patient, we can hope that whatever techniques are successfully developed there will also translate into use with bone marrow transplants.
