Due to increasing concerns that falling childhood vaccination rates in Australia are putting the community at increasing risk of death or severe complications from nearly banished childhood diseases, the Australian Federal Government has recently reduced the handful of acceptable reasons for parents requesting their children be exempt from vaccinations, if they wish to receive child benefit payments, to just one - medical. This has stirred up some community concerns over the safety of childhood vaccinations, leading Ian Musgrave, Senior lecturer in Pharmacology at University of Adelaide, Australia, to write this article debunking some of the more common myths:

Obviously, with our struggling immune systems, we are at particular risk from falling community vaccination rates, so take the time to familiarise yourself with what the real story is behind common vaccination concerns, so you can inform the "mythinformed".

Photo: European Honey Bees busy filling honeycomb in a gum tree hollow. This summer, I've had a few unwelcome 'innoculations' from these bees, prompting me to look very carefully above in addition to looking down for dangerous wildlife, when I stop for a rest during my walks in the scrub. I'm just glad that they have a "single use" needle - I haven't had any infections from bee stings.

I'm still trying to capture a photo of a Drop Bear, Thylarctos plummetus, which is a large, arboreal, predatory marsupial related to the Koala. australianmuseum.net.au/dro... Having read the feedback, perhaps I should have vegemite on my toast a bit more often - just to stay safe.
