Hi everybody,

I have been giving my 9 years old this medication for about 2 and a half years and when I read the side effects of azathioprine like cancer I freak out, sometimesI wonder what is gonna kill him first, the medicine or the liver disease?

Could you guys tell me what is your long term experience with it? He takes 1 50mlg a day.

Thank you

I've got autoimmune hepatitis. I diagnosed a couple of weeks after my 13th birthday I'm not 22 in November!

I'm on azathrioprine too. And when I was younger my mum used to give it too me. My life I have kicked up a fuss over worrying about the side effects.

9 years later I've realised that effectiveness of the meds out weights the side effects. My dad's mum died really young to breast cancer and there alot if cancer in my family so I've always worried before even this. As your son is on a low dose there's very minimal chance.

To be honest I've never had any problems with azathrioprine. That's not to say for the last 9 years I haven't moaned what side effects are written on the packet...

At the end of the day what's the alternative? Don't take the meds and get poorly?

I know people know that have had transplants that are on say 150mg and even more than that! And those people live very long life's even on such a high dose.

There's always what ifs in the world but you've got to learn to figure out "the benefits out weigh the risks"
