I’ve been suffering with unexplained teeth pain for years now and nothing has helped. I saw a brilliant neurologist the other day who actually explained things to me. She said that due to my teeth pain and not eating as it hurts to much that I have no muscle left. Low on lots of vitamins and liver problems now. She weighed me and down to 6st 9 and said if I carry on like this I will die. She’s prescribing me vitamins and nutrition drinks plus Amitriptyline 10 mg to block my nerves. I’m terrified of taking these tablets so want to no if people have found these helpful and are they safe. I’ve read lots of side effects but if I want to get better I no I have to try them. Any reassurance really appreciated or if you had bad side effects what were they. I don’t want to die because of food. I think I will be taking these tablets at night if I remember correctly.

This is a very late answer but as you didn't get any answers I thought I'd say that I take amitriptyline 10mg at night for nerve pain from severe shingles and I have no side effects at all. It initially took almost 2 weeks to start being effective but it has damped down the pain sufficiently that I can get a decent nights sleep and that, more than anything, makes me feel 100% better even when I get attacks of nerve pain during the day. I do think it is reducing the nerve pain during the day, too - the spasms don't seem to last as long as they used to.

Of course just because I have no side effects from it and it works for me, doesn't mean that it'll be exactly the same for you, but I really think it is certainly worth trying, if recommended by a dr.

I hope this helps you, or anyone else who might be worried about taking amitriptyline for nerve pain.
