I was diagnosed with hypercholesrolemia 2 years ago, & I don`t understand why my cholesterol has risen after being low-normal all my life.

I`m 59 years old, & have never had any problems before, but now my gp has put me on statins, & I`m worried about the long term effects of taking these drugs.

Hi hairyfairy,

I'm presuming that you are a lady as there are several of us on this site of your age with the same problem.

Ultimately the decision has to be yours after weighing up the risks and benefits and your own circumstances and medical history. I would say with the help of your GP, but my experience in my practice is that they differ in their opinion on statins as well.

I have just read all I can on the subject and used this and other forums to share knowledge. This has given me a terrible headache, but is empowering and it is your decision not anybody elses at the end of the day.

I agree with Aliwally. We must put to the Drs to task. Go and speak to other GPs in your practice and ask questions. Have you asked your GP to break down your results and see where you could perhaps improve them with a change of diet or exercise regime instead of going straight onto the medication? I presume with your history you were getting regular tests done. All the best

I am also 59 and have been on statins for about 10 years, if you have regular blood tests for liver function you should have no problems, I would rather take the tablets than have a heart attack.

It does depend of course on how well you are tolerating statins as well.
