Maybe my nose is defective but fish doesn't smell much. If the fish smells, it's probably gone bad. Well, except some of the oily fish when cooked, but you can always eat smoked fish cold, or some fish raw like in sushi.

There are many types of fish, from simple white ones like cod and monkfish, through meaty ones like tuna, to oily stuff like mackerel and bloaters. I can't stand bloaters, but that's about it.

I wonder if any of the unusual stuff like octopus counts as fish for this?

Yes, I think it's the omega 3 in fish that is meant to be so good for heart health. I'm sure you could get this from supplements.

Fresh white fish is very expensive now but salmon and trout is not so bad, although most of it in the supermarkets is farmed, which some people may object to. I try to eat a couple of tins of sardines a week, but sometimes I just can't face them, especially on a cold day!

Get your GP to prescribe you Omacor - it's the purest form of Omega 3, he might be reluctant because it's expensive!

Also mackerel is relatively palatable, buy fish from a local independent Fishmonger, supermarket fish is days old and the key to tasty fish is freshness.

Hello janeygo, I'm not a fan of fish either but I have been taking Omega-3 fish oil capsules for over 10 years now. I have found that they don't "repeat" on me like some smoked fish does and they appear to be invaluable as a source of oil for the joints as well as good for the circulation. It's worth giving them a try but make it about 3 months. They're not expensive and can be found in virtually all supermarkets and chemists. Best of luck
