Chia seeds for Omega 3

Hi All, I have been eating approx 30g daily of Chia seeds with my morning porridge. I buy 1kg packs from Costco for £4.99 per pack. Does anyone have any information on the good/bad effects of Chia seeds. The ones I buy are not Organic but are a branded product from Costco and I know Chia seeds are a good plant source of Omega 3 fatty acids.

How have you benefited from this product?

It’s difficult to say if I’ve benefited from the Chia seeds as I’ve made so many changes to my diet over the last 12 months and have also taken a statin for 8 months. My lipid profile has improved as the Triglyceride level has fallen from 2.3 to 1.21. My total cholesterol has fallen from 5 to 2.8 which is probably not a good thing. HDL has risen marginally but still only 0.99 but just cannot seem to increase this. My Cardiologist recommends I stay on the statin for now for its potential anti inflammatory effects rather than LDL reduction. My medium term goal is to come off statins altogether.

I am waiting another blood test result this week when I should see my latest lipid profile.

AS you say total cholesterol of 2.8 in not good! Few years ago my total cholesterol did go down to 2.8, there were many issues that I had but did not realise this. Take care. Do give us an update when you have your blood test results.

Latest blood test result was triglycerides now 1.02 and HDL up to 1.14. Total cholesterol is now 3.1 mainly due to the increase in HDL. I think this is a good indicator for my diet change but makes a question mark over Atorvastatin if my good HDL cholesterol has increased by over 15% whilst the dosage has halved from 80mg to 40mg.

Hi Sandy, I had meant to ask you what issues that you had with low cholesterol? Mine has increased slightly from 2.8 to 3.1 since having my Atorvastatin dose halved from 80mg to 40 daily. I am particularly concerned in light of the recent study saying statins do more harm than good for the majority. I am too scared to come off them although my Cardiologist says I can but GP prefers me to stay on 40mg dose.
