High Cholesterol

I went to see my doctor on Friday after having a phone call to say my cholesterol was 7.4, all he was interested in was prescribing statins.  I declined the offer and he told me I had a 18% chance of having a heart attack in the next 10 years, he hardly looked at me, whilst doing this. I asked how he had worked this out and he replied with well you actually have a 1.8% chance per year!! Multiply this by 10 and you get 18%!!

I have numerous other symptoms that point to hypothyroidism, high cholesterol being one indicator, and all he wants to do is pump me full of drugs that may not be necessary and might actually be very harmful to me.

Just wanted to vent a little..

If you are able go for life style change, food intake control and regular exercise, this can help towards a better healthy life. I am not sure about your doctor's maths!

A GP should be able to show you on the computer are result and then change the parameters to help you to get a better understanding on the QRISK score.

î recommend you speak with a cardiologist ( a heart doctor). He will put you through minor exertion tests - cycling- walking  etc and he will advise you how to conduct your life. Ordinary daotors are pill-pushers and that is how they earn their money... Their name is on the prescription and they get a kick-back at the end of the year.

Yes, I'm a whistle-blower, at 72.

That is exactly what I was thinking about the doctors, they are paid by the pharmaceutical companies to dish out pills , I have read too much about statins to be comfortable about taking them without a very good reason.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) is trying to have all statins banned world wide. I wonder if theay will succed disposing of this poison. I had my Chol levels checked and the Doc was happy. He knows I don't take statins any more and he knows he's wasting his time trying re-pescribe them. I didn't question him on statins ... maybe I should...

Maths wasn't his strong point then!

Cholesterol ratio is so much more important than total cholesterol. But the true measure of the shape you are in is the number of small dense ldl you have in your blood stream.  And the best way to deal with them is to change to a healthier diet, avoiding carbohydrates, and exercise regularly.  wheatbellyblog.com/2013/11/...

Study Shows 48 Percent Risk of Diabetes in Women Who Take Statins (but, to be honest there is a high risk of that whatever gender) drhyman.com/blog/2012/01/19...  they also increase the risk of acute and chronic kidney disease amongst many more issues.
