We cannot live without cholesterol and 5.3 is only slightly elevated so wouldn't normally be a level to worry about.
Factors that influence this are age and HDL/LDL ratio. A slightly elevated level is actually beneficial as we age as cholesterol offers a number of health benefits. The recognised optimal ratio of HDL to total cholesterol is less than 3.5 to 1 - so your HDL should be above 1.51.
Do you exercise regularly. You don't state your age. I'm 72. I take a cold shower every morning. After a light breakfast I cycle between 30 to 60 minutes on my home trainer. I drink olive oil and rapeseed oil, a mouthful of each and take 100 milligrams of stomach freindly aspirin. Yes, we need cholestoral. There is no such thing as "good and bad" cholestoral. Without it women could not have babies and we would all be susceptable to Altzheimers disease. Light exercises like cycling and jogging burn Cholestoral, lower your blood pressure and your pulse rate. So, start training today and stop worrying, stress kills. Drink camille tea, you'll live longer than you would without it.
eraruc44 you replied to me rather than Zelianascimento so you had me worried there for a moment with a total cholesterol of 5.3 at age 72. But I realise why I was confused now and totally concur that a healthy lifestyle can make a difference in maintaining healthy levels for most people - though I'm not sure I personally would want to start the day with a cold shower. There are some for whom even the healthiest lifestyle wouldn't work but it does for most.
