Quotation for Saturday 25th April 2020

Good morning everyone,

I was sitting thinking about my Irish family this morning. I've only recently connected with them and never physically met them yet! It's a long story and I only found them about three years ago after doing some genealogy research online. Research played a big part but also a big stroke of luck whilst I was visiting my dad's former home in County Kerry. The COVID19 crisis has thwarted this year's plans to meet up with them, so we're still having to rely on email, but I'm still hopeful that one of these days......

Anyway it reminded me of that most famous of Irish sayings, its origins lost in the mists of time. I expect most of you know it already. But it's very beautiful so here's a reprise.

'May the road rise to meet you

May the wind be always at your back

May the sun shine warm upon your face

May the rain fall soft upon your fields,

And, until we meet again,

May God hold you in the hollow of his hands.'

My son did a lot of family research and it threw up things we thought best left. Let sleeping dogs lie. It's not always straightforward.

Yes Lynd, it's not always a great idea to dig around too much. There was a lot of turbulence in my story too, with my dad having left Ireland after a bitter family row and he was never reconciled, but eventually we did catch up with his brothers. And on my last trip to Ireland I went to the church dad's family had attended while living in Clonakilty, Co Cork, where my grandfather had been postmaster for a while. The priest there made me so welcome and invited me to attend Mass and afterwards I somehow felt I'd put to bed a lot of the wrongs of the past. And then out of the blue the chap whose cottage we'd rented said he knew someone with my grandmother's name in Co Kildare, and put me in touch with her. Not only did she have the same name, she was my cousin! So happy to say, my family story worked out well.😊
