burning throat and mouth, some times along with nausea

Hello everyone,

I have burning throat and mouth, some times along with nausea. I checked medically almost all organs of my body, but the doctors did not recognize anything specific. So my psychiatrist recognized the depression and nerve pain.

Now, I am taking doxepin and paxil. I still have the symptoms but I am much better. My doctor prescribed pregabalin additionally, but it did not work. Can someone advice me about this condition? Thanks a lot.

Have you had an endoscopy to see what is going on? The burning and nausea sound like acid reflux so I would insist on a second opinion.

Yes i had endoscopy but nothing was observed. However my doctor gave me Lanzoprazol for acid reflux and i am taking it as well but not effective.

“Glossopharyngeal neuralgia is an irritation of the ninth cranial nerve causing extreme pain in the back of the throat, tongue and ear. Attacks of intense, electric shock-like pain can occur without warning or can be triggered by swallowing.” Same family as Trigeminal Neuralgia I believe.

Have you been tested for autoimmune diseases such as Sjögren’s and Lupus yet?

I saw a otolaryngologist for testing my mouth, throat, and nose but everything was Ok. I did not especially test he autoimmune diseases but the general results from my blood test was normal. Could you please let me know more about autoimmune test? thanks.

The ones they usually start with are ANA, Rheumatoid Factor and inflammation markers ESR and CRP plus full blood count. ENT don’t usually know much about the immune system.

thank you, which specialist do you recommend for now? neurologist or psychiatrist, or ...? I am really confused. The physician cannot recognize the disease to refer me to the specialist.

in reply to AliKh

A psychiatrist would only be useful if you have a psychiatric/ mental health problem?

A rheumatologist would probably be best, depending on where you live and the health system there. Some neurologists are better than others but both of these deal with vague symptoms all the time so are used to medicine not being black and white.

Hi, I read about the Sjögren’s and Lupus, and I do not have the symptoms of those disease, like eye dryness and skin problems. Could you please let me know the possibility of autoimmune problem of my case?Thank you.

in reply to AliKh

The dryness can show up long after the neuropathy for some.

So you think that the best specialist for me is rheumatologist? what about Glossopharyngeal neuralgia?

in reply to AliKh

Sorry but I can’t help you there - I think a neurologist who knows about Sjögren’s and Lupus would be good but a good rheumatologist might be equally helpful.
