Swissa, if you have tinnitus then you are with one in ten of the world population. It’s very common. It might go away all on its own.
Many people have T which they find problematic to start with and then habituate.
You may say, how do I habituate? There are lots of techniques and other posters will, I’m sure, give you your take on them. I’ve two personal examples. The first one is common: When the weather suddenly turns cold, you put on a heavy coat for the first time in months. It’s really uncomfortable- for about three minutes and by the time you’ve got down the road you’ve forgotten all about it. Does this resonate with you? You’ve habituated in a couple of minutes.
Another example: when I bought my first property it was a flat on a main road out of London. The most I could afford. The traffic noise, especially at night, was constant and if felt like I was never going to be able to sleep properly again . So what happened? After a few weeks, I just didn’t notice it.
Tinnitus can become like someone you pass in the street - you see them but you don’t need to notice them, they are irrelevant.
have a look at replies to other posts on this form,. You’ll see what others have said and how they coped,
Finally, remember there is no “cure” that your doctor can give you. You might trawl the internet and see ads for cures …. they are just trying to get your money.
There are a lot of "miracle (scam) cures) don't get stung. Ask the BTA before you get anything. Tinnitus can be a total nightmare or not. Its a new friend either way. Get to know it, dont ignore it. I have lots of techniques in my toolbox. Ask away at anytime. Itll be ok, might not be wonderful but youll get buy it, only thing for it.
that’s quite good only waiting two months for ent department seeing you, so many people have had to wait over a year. Try and relax in the meantime as the more tense and stressed you get the more the tinnitus likes it and will react. I find going out in the fresh air for walks with my poodles helps me a lot , I hope you feel better soon.
Thats probably blood pressure after you eat but don't quote me on that. There us a drug called propananol thats a heart regulator/beta blocker, this would atop any panics you may het. Consult your go first obviously
yes you are correct, indeed anything like that we do can increase the tinnitus symptoms , Different environments can affect me too and I feel some pressure build up.
Ear plugs, wax ones from Boots. Tune in, dont fihjt it, i know its easier said than done. During the day , bus/train journeys are brilliant. The rumble of the bus and the passing scenery seems to really take you out it. I have further advice. Dont be sjy in asking. It can seem hopeless but you just got to fill your tinnitus toolbox somehow. Youll get there my friend. Sorry you got it,i really am. Chin up and all that😊
Knacker yourself out as much as you can. Find a noise that you can tolerate thats on the same level as your T. Try the ear plugs cause just having the one noise to contend with can put you in a medative state
hello. Like a the comments above you’ll get used to in time. There are also some treatments in the pipeline. One of them is at advanced stage in Ireland. I believe it’s called Liniere or something like that. Hang in there.
I loved the quiet, couldnt sleep with any noice. Then developed tinnitus in both ears, I thought it would clear, but it didnt. I was late 50's.
I was referred to ENT, the referred to audiologist who specialised in Tinnitus. I have apparently loss of high frequency in both ears. (i have never had a noisy job, but do have other heath issues.) It was recommended I had hearing aid, and initially I was really shocked, I think I probably expected a magic cure!
So four or so years on, I wear my hearing aids (I could not manage without them), they mute the tinnitus, not take it away completely. I have an added option of white noise in the hearing aids if I have a bad day.
Night time, I cannot wear them so I have a little white noise machine playing all night (I like a rambling brook - it distracts me from the noise). I avoid really noisy things, the Cinema for instance. Someone banging something close to my ears, or a child squealing in excitment etc., causes it to spike. I cannot cope easily with peace and quiet (which I loved), it makes the tinnitus more noticable so I usually have some quiet background music on, or the tv etc.
I thought initially I would never be able to be happy again with this noise constantly in my ears. However, the brain adapts, and in reality, anyone suffering from tinnitus has to.
Being outside in the open seems to make it better, concentrating on listening to the birds or wind etc. Even traffic can distract from the inner noice.
Not sure if this has helped but it gets easier eventually.
I also love silence and very light sleeper, couldnt sleep without my ear plugs. What about the hearingh aid, How can they mute high pitched sound in ear?
It was explained to me that if the inner ear is damaged, fine microscopic sensory hairs that pick up noise are damaged, so send messages to the brain which makes up the tinnitus noise .... the brain has to have something, hence having a hearing aid to increase the outside noise, pick up things our hearing may miss, allows information to be passed through the ear to the brain ..... but is was complicated so she simplified it for me ...
I do know, it took me about a week or so to get used to them and I was desperate for something to help, and they definitely did. Its a very strange concept I know ...
it varies, but I am aware it’s louder as soon as I take them out. (For bath, shower sleep etc) Apparently, if you use the white noise option in the hearing aid a lot , it may reduce the tinnitus over a period of time. If my tinnitus is especially bad with the hearing aids in, the white noise helps.
I have had my hearing aids now for quite a while. I had an ear infection (non related) and couldnt wear them for a few days ... and my Tinnitus was definately worse. So when wearing them they reduce the noise, but they do not cure it unfortunatley.
Better, because generally there is underlying damage (thats what I was told), I was tested and the hearing aids are set to pick up the high frequency noise that my ears apparently dont. I personally could not imagine llife without them.
hearing aids. My take on it is that the real world is more prominent when you are wearing them, therefore the “ghost”world of T fades into the background a bit.
