Roaring/booming noise - in my head?

I have low level ringing in my ears but in the last months I am experiencing a roaring/booming sensation that sounds like a heating system running hard. It feels like a pressure as much as a noise. No one else can hear it. It is disturbing my sleep and quality of living. I don't have high blood pressure, have stress (as we all do) but seem only to hear it in my flat where I live and now work. Is this roaring noise tinnitus? and/or stress related? Or is there a noise in the building system somewhere? I would be grateful for your thoughts, please. Thank you.

Could well be tinnitus. We all experience it in different ways - and it’s very common. Of course, I can’t tell if it’s in your building!! but it’s quite possible that the noise emanates from somewhere locally. You (or rather, people) can hear outside noises within ones body - there is a famous musician who was deaf from birth but hears her instruments through her body.Have you had a good read of the British tinnitus association website? That’ll give you tips and hints

Hi ClareU

My first experience of tinnitus in 2014 was that I thought I could hear a generator or boiler running. Then when I realised that the noises were inside me - that was when panic set in.

I was later told by an ENT consultant that because I have some hearing loss I was picking up these sounds from the carotid artery which apparently runs very close to the hearing nerve.

I can hear blood flowing past my right ear and also the sound of my heart and circulation. So I get pulsating and humming and the normal hissing that you seem to get when you have hearing loss. I also recently acquired musical tinnitus.

It`s not so scary once you know what`s going on. Over the years I`ve just learned to live with it.

Thank you very much, Lynne, that is helpful to know. I’ve booked with an ENT doctor so hope to have clarity but your feedback already helps a lot. Best, Clare

Hello Clare ,I’m sorry your suffering.

I too have more of a roar and noise similar to a fan oven running through my right side. I can sympathise with you and relate to you because mine is identical. I’ve had mine since last March. I can at least sleep though. Most people experience ringing, hissing, buzzing , but I’m like you with the roar and pressure , so SNAP.

From Penny. Take care

Does your roaring get louder with other noises? Mine gets worse with shower noise or traffic etc. it’s terrible and feels like my ear is being microwaved

My pressure gets worse if I walk around and do jobs . I also get an imbalance . I think I might have Meneries too. Have you had an mri scan or ct scan. Mine came back clear . I know it’s awful and you don’t know who to turn to. This site is very helpful

Hi,

Mine started like that last June. Consultant said a virus had damaged my auditory nerve. It was so bad I came close to giving up on life. The BTA has been great with the information they provide. When I looked into it further I believe it was my ear drum going into spasm. It lasted for several months before it became intermittent and I was left with a hissing and ringing 24/7. I found taking magnesium in the form of pumpkin seeds helped and I take B12, allergy tablets and iron. It might be a coincidence but when I started taking these daily the helicopter/boiler noise stopped. Good Luck

Don’t give up. Just try different things until you find what works for you. Accepting the T is the way forward, there are days when I wish I hadn’t got it and I burst into tears. But, it isn’t going to go away so I have to win the battle and show who’s in charge. Good luck
