Tinnitus and Hyperacusis

Hi

I posted on here recently about my increase in tinnitus. I also have Hyperacusis . Does tinnitus get worse if your Hyperacusis gets worse? I’ve been stuck indoors since March shielding because of Covid and also not able to go out due to other health issues. I live alone so my environment is always quiet. I always have low background music on but it is very low so I haven’t been exposed to much sound this year. Just wondered if this may be triggering my tinnitus.

Thanks for any responses

Georgia

There’s an article about hyperacusis and T on the British tinnitus association website.

Hi happy Rosie I’m still finding my way on this forum and I forgot T and hyperacuses on this to. What a relief. Reading your message and reply’s. And I get it The tiniest noise is like electric shocks going through me. Last year lockdown my house has been noisy and my ears have been screaming a lot On the tinnitus forums I should have made it more clearer I had hyperacuses with T and chronic migraines. And Iv also learned pink noise better for hyperacuses with reading replies on here. I have listened to white noise 24/7 for 4 years. Have mp3 that plays 10 hours of it and for the past 4 weeks Iv not been able to tune into it to calm my T down. Machine machines , Hoover’s, lawn mores , cars on the roads kill my T. Noises are a fear to me. I have been giving great advice from dog lover and i feel supported on here. I need to explain more to my family about hyperacuses. And set my boundaries. Thank you again doglover. You are on here giving great advice. I’m so grateful and appreciate everyone on here for sharing their feelings and thoughts. It’s really helping me.

As a guess your attention is being drawn towards it. If you are feeling anxious this could also account for your increased awareness/perception of tinnitus.

It's seems you are doing all the right things. We all have good and bad days/weeks.

All the best in these trying times.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the reply. Yes I’m feeling really anxious now and fully tuned in to my tinnitus. I’m just really fighting depression. I feel like I’ve gone back to square one.

You've habituated before so you can do it again. Keep yourself busy.

Hello,I also have had a tinnitus spike and feel I’m drawn to it…. I had tinnitus 26 years and habituated… this started 6 weeks ago almost four weeks post op.

I’m wearing plugs anywhere noisy x

Mine is louder in one ear than the other…

Hoping I can habituate again.

Hi Georgia, I too have Hyperacusis and Tinnitus. Whenever I am subjected to a loud noise my Tinnitus goes through the roof and takes around three days to come back to a manageable level. When watching TV I have to have the volume quite low, if I turn the volume up my Tinnitus gets louder and it makes listening virtually impossible. I am trying to habituate and not wear earplugs too often, just when I know there is likely to be a loud noise or something that I know effects my Tinnitus. (I still get caught out though)

It’s not ideal but accepting the situation is a big help in moving forward.

Yeah the tv affects me too. I have the subtitles on so I can keep the volume low. Whenever I go out I wear plugs because I’ve been caught out too many times with alarms which have caused new T sounds. Things had improved but I really think being stuck indoors for months has made my ears even more sensitive and so it’s affecting my tinnitus. It’s all so depressing.

Yes it is. I use subtitles usually when watching films.

I saw a documentary a few weeks ago about a professional Rugby League player who was diagnosed with MND in December 2019, his name is Rob Burrow. The documentary made me realise that no matter how sorry I was feeling for myself there is always someone a lot worse off than me. Given the chance if Rob Burrow could swap MND for Hyperacusis and Tinnitus it would be like winning the lottery for him. The program had a profound effect on me and how I view life.

Here are two clips from that documentary:-

Exactly the same for me. Loud noise make my T worse as does no noise when sleeping. ENT said not to wear ear plugs, but whenever I get expose to a lot of noise (even a lot of people talking in a restaurant) I suffer the consequences later with loud T.

Hi, I too have hyperacusis & tinnitus. It is so life changing for me as daily noises maKe my tinnitus much worse, tap running, hoovering, traffic, going out in the car etc. There is such a long list to mention. I have been under the tinnitus team at the hospital who are very helpful. I have been given white noise which is heard through tiny hearing aids. I have been told that the hyperacusis needs sorting first which would be pink noise. I am due to go back soon if they are still seeing people. Good luck to you.

Yes, pink noise for Hyperacusis or just plenty of natural sound. My Audiologist downloaded nature sounds for my H so I can listen to it through my hearing aids. Julian Cowan Hill has lots of good advice for H and T. You can find him on YouTube.

Hi GJ. Your message was like me writing it. My T hits the roof when noise is around me. Iv been struggling for mths the now. Are you still on this forum. I wish I was back on here 6mths ago and read everything. My phone broke and I couldn’t get into this forum because I forgot my log ins. I was devastated. When I’m putting my boundaries down with my family as they haven’t a clue I will probably be able to explain it better with reading other messages and replies. Thank you GJ.

HiReally sorry to hear you’re struggling same as me. My situation has got worse. I’m not able to go out and since the beginning of this year two houses one right next to me and one behind are doing major renovations. Angle grinding, drilling, every loud noise you can possibly think of. I have to wear my plugs and defenders all the time which I know in the long run won’t help the H but I can’t cope without them. I’m really struggling and my T is pretty bad. I know things can improve, it’s just trying to stay positive which is hard. Just keep low noise on all the time and try and build up your sound tolerance. The hyperacusis forum is really helpful. I hope things improve for you.

Thank you so much for replying GJ. I totally get the renovation noise. 2 of my neighbors got new run ways put in. I was hearing it from morning to night, couldn’t open the windows. It’s just came to me reading your reply that maybe the runways getting dug up and new one laid has caused my T to get loud. And with my daughter and granddaughter staying with me at the moment the noise is not so loud but penetrating. By night time I can’t get a nursery rhyme out my head. I can hear it going over and over mixed in with my T. I hope this makes sense. I no we are all struggling together and I’m so grateful for your reply. I have to wear ear defenders when I get the energy to Hoover. I’m so sorry you’re also struggling. H & T are hard to explain to people. They don’t understand why I struggle to hear but can hear and cringe at the slightest noise. My hearing can’t recognize running water. To me it sounds like a heavy downpour hitting the roof. Got new boiler in October I’m still trying to get used to the new noise from it. It’s not noisy it’s the fan inside it when heating clicking off and on through the cold days and nights. My daughter moving out soon so I’m ready to hit the restart button on getting the house quiet again just to get my T down and my H like electric shocks going through my body then it’s sore. I no it’s so hard to stay positive. a T nurse once explained the negative thoughts are due to T as the brain damage is connected to the negative parts of the brain at the back of the head It’s exhausting to. My noise is mostly in my head lately and ears getting full.I don’t go out either. I also hope things improve for you.
