Long term tinnitus sufferer

My first post. My name is Chris and I am 72 years old. I was first diagnosed with tinnitus 20 years ago but managed to lead a normal life. Last September I was diagnosed with prostate cancer and found that my tinnitus became severe seriously affecting my daily life. I was referred to the local ENT department, had an MRI scan that came back normal. My operation to remove the prostate gland took place four weeks ago and appeared to go well. I am due to speak to the surgeon in two weeks time to hopefully get the all clear. This period of waiting is very stressful and, I believe causing my tinnitus to be very severe. I have broken down emotionally several times. I am aware of relaxation and meditation but find that neither really help.

Hi Chris, thank you for posting and hope you’re recovering well from your operation. As we all know the tinnitus gets much worse at times of stress or shock etc and I know that well. I finally had to go down the route of antidepressants after resisting for years plus diazepam if I am overwhelmed. Sometimes medication can be really helpful and it’s helped me to cope with the tinnitus. Sounds like you’re going through a lot. Do you have someone you can talk to and support you? It might be worth talking to you GP about how you’re feeling.

Best Regards

Caroline

Thank you for your reply. I have a very supportive wife who understands me well and is a great help. We are waiting for a call back from the doctors right now. As you suggested I am going to discuss some kind of antidepressant to see if it helps. The one thing I am clinging to is that my anxiety will calm down once I have had my operation review with the surgeon in two weeks time. Keep well.

Hello Chris hope this email meets you on a goodday with your tinnitus, stress is a trigger to T so try not to worry too much of what the results will be my friend live everyday as if was your last in that way you will be stress free. Also watch your caffeine in take and alcohol as all these have a bit that makes T buzz harder, I wish you all the best and hopefully you will share your good news with us soon stay blessed and safe bye

Hi dusty1947

It's always good to talk about problems, as bottling things up, as you know, can lead to an explosion.

I absolutely understand that the prostate stuff is now centre stage and is your focus.

I had long standing T, which Went Away! simply by me re-defining what T is.

My post explains how in greater detail.

Keep busy!

Hello Chris

I am Emily here to help if I can

I am so sorry to hear this is happening to you. My Tinnitus used to be very bad I also have hypercuses in conjunction. I tried everything to block out the sound and i struggled to watch TV listen to the radio.. I fund a brilliant app on YouTube called 10 hours of tinnitus relief it seems to take the tinnitus away completely I use it in the background when I listen to the radio and when going to sleep and doing the housework since I've been using it I seldom hear my tinnitus. I know it's not a cure but if it helps you to lead a less anxious life then its worth a try. I do hope your treatment at the hospital goes well for you my father had the same operation many many years ago and has been completely fine also they have come such a long way with treatment in this day and age.

Please try not to worry as you say ears are very sensitive and anxiety can make tinnitus worse

Best wishes

Emily

66 me, with 'BPH' but it's just a nuisance, unlike prostate cancer, and so I send you my best wishes, and congratulate you on your bravery. Even if you have suffered emotionally, who the hell wouldn't, and you are a very brave and strong man. You have my admiration, Sir, and can I say despite all you are suffering, can you see the black thorn in flower, hear the dawn chorus, feel the warmth of the Sun and go out and feel the rain on your face? Take heart be strong, and again , my very best wishes to you.

Hi Dusty, you've been through a lot of stress, and I know from having severe T for as long as you or longer, that stress makes it worse. Now may be the most stressful time for all of us, so who can speak to that? Doctors can't usually reduce stress, but they do advocate for it. I learned some stretches from my yoga instructor he called" cimatics" it was years ago and I never learned to spell it but, I still do it and it works. If you're able, walk in nature, climb a hill, talk to someone about something good rather than bad. Work in the garden, cook, eat or pray if you believe in something. Every day we can sense or feel anything, is a gift.
