Do Grometts Help?

Hello, Im new to this Forum and would welcome any help fro members. I suffer with rhinitis and bronchiectasis, Gradually the rhinitis got worse and I am now deaf in one ear and wear a hearing aid due to the build up of mucous behind the middle ear. The ENT specialist was reluctant to drain my ear causing the deafness saying it could re-occur and build up again. He has now relented and the operation will go ahead with grommetts being fitted.

Has anyone on the Forum any experience of having grommetts fitted in similar circumstances and if yes, have they worked?

If i were you i would go ahead because it should dry the inner ear out at the very least,

If the Eustachian tubes are working as they should you can tell this by blowing your nose or chewing you should hear you own voice ,ears popping and things sound loud after after they remain closed and open with changes in pressure so you should not get the build up of liquid

Thanks for that reply Emily it really lifts my spirits. I am going for a assessment next week to see if I am able to have a full anaesethetic. Do you know if grommetts are successful in an adult?

Yes as far as i know they do work. I didn't have them fitted i had bloon dilation option.. But I know when fitted it might take a week to get used to them if you can't feel dizzy etc. They can take them out they will tell you that anyway..

Not at all I am only to pleased to help.

Its an operation you are put to sleep they insert a tube into the nose to the back of the throat to the tubes one at a time bloon is filled with air holding open the tube for 20 seconds and sucking out any mucus blocking it.. If you Google ear bloon dilation it should come up .

Hi,did the balloon dilation work for you,did it reduce symptoms, I'v had crackling and popping for years.doctors won't try anything because hearing is to good but I would love to try something to reduce my symptoms.

They have a sensible criteria! If you don't have pain, tinnitus, dizzness, balancing problems, felling sick, chronic ear infections and it doesn't have a detrimental affect on quality of life, then leave well alone!

The bloon dilation didn't work for me but my tinnitus was so loud it was inhiberting me leading a normal life also I had hearing loss!

to some degree it got better on its own and when I was given hearing aids last week the tinnitus went completely

Thanks for your reply, I do get pain on and off,I have loud tinnitus but don't have any other symptoms that you mention.i have no hearing loss and that's why they won't touch my ears,I do get regular ear infections.
