Hi I have tinnitus just over a year and half now, after the onset of tinnitus I got hyperacusis which last about 4 months, but over the last few weeks my hyperacusis has come back worse than before and I'm getting a echo in people's voice aswel. Has anybody experienced hyperacusis coming back like this?

When you say echo is that when they speak loud or just in general without high pitch ...what are your symptoms of hypercausis? For me when people shout or speak loud it feels like a echo or distorted in my right ear..it happened during change of weather but still there

Hi, yes I get distorted sound when people speak but am now getting everything's to loud like tick tock from a clock or squeaky sound from doors or tills in a super market, I have the cold but I don't think it's what's causing this

Do you get this in both ears? Is it when people speak loud or normal tone ? I don’t have any problems listening to TV but struggle if am in say a changing room and people talking...i didn’t realise hypercausis means distorted sound

Yes I get it in both ears but my problem at the minute is everything is loud, there is a condition called diplacusis which means both ears hear the sound at slightly different times and that's what causes a echo in some tones, I would say thats what you probably have if noises aren't really loud for you

Mike. Thank you and at least pin pointing a cause ? I am hopeful it will get better as I know infections can last many months and it’s there but not as bad as it was 2 months ago...noises aren’t loud for me....ears are so complex but am heartened today with your advise. Thank you and am sure you’re spike will clear 🙏🏾

Hi, it's good to talk about these things, yes I have a bad cold this last two weeks and probably isn't helping the cause,I'm on waiting list to get tonsils out, so hopefully when this happens it will help me.

I hope so and saw an audiologist a few months ago who said it’s not Permanent. Whether you’re right or wrong fact is it’s good to talk and has helped me a lot ...Thank you 👍🏽

Hi Michael-yes mine has come back before. Just randomly with no warning and lasts for however long (days to weeks) then over time fades. I never get colds so was nothing to do with that.

I DO have a cold tho this morning, after 4 days of tonsillitis (prescribed antibiotics yesterday) and my ear is SO sensitive and all noises sound louder and echoey and distorted.

I would try not to think about or worry about the change in sound u til you’re well clear of your cold. It’s hard but focusing on the sounds and overanalysing why they sound different could send you down a spiral you don’t wanna go down.

Try to accept it for what it is for next few days, avoid situations where you may be prone to loud uncomfortable sounds and try some relaxation techniques. Hopefully in a couple of weeks you’ll feel back to normal. All the best x

Hi, thanks for the reply, yes it will come and go, I have a sinus problem the last few weeks so I think this is definitely not helping because I'm all blocked up,I'm on a waiting list to get my tonsils out aswel.

Thanks

Hello

if you hear you own voice or an echo it usually means your eustation tubes are not closing properly it should sort itself out

Hope this helps

Emily

It will be your eustation tubes staying open. I have had the same my ENT consultant diagnosed this most cases get better with time and become less and less if its due to a bad cold but a few people symptoms will persist and an underline condition may not be found.. Things can be done to help the condition perhaps your GP would be first port of call

Patulous eustation tube Google that it should give you some information

All the best
