Every morning when I get up out of bed my tinnitus is Bearly noticeable, after a hour it just goes up in volume as the day goes on.i really can't work out why this is.really at wits end about this , driving me mad because volume gets so loud by evening. Is anybody else got same problem?

Mine can get louder as day goes on. Spikes at work then sometimes calms on an evening. I figure stress exacerbates it at work and I know loud noises (my directors on their mobiles) definitely set it off and make it worse.

There are apps, which help. The main thing is to try and destress (not always easy) and focus on other things. I find archery, running and doing crafts help with this.

Some days, if I am able to not get too worked up, it doesn't make an appearance or remains quiet.

Good luck and stay positive 😊

Hi, thanks for your reply and I think your right stress is the main problem, it and anxiety.

Thanks Michael

Sounds very similar to myself. People

May tell you that you have Hyperacusis, which is what I was told for years but not the case. My T is reactive, it gets louder with noise, and is affected by travelling in a car, and also using electrical equipment. I’m 8 years in and it’s been a rough ride but I have found some things that help. White noise generators helped for a while but not any more. I find that some Tinnitus videos on YouTube help me, and some of the recordings on the myNoise app. My audiologist told me a small number of people have ‘reactive’ T but they don’t know why. My T was caused by a head injury and when I’ve tried to find others with the same issues they are few and far between and mostly have T as a result of head injury or an operation rather than due to noise exposure.

Hi, I think your situation is very similar to mine, I'm not sure what caused mine, only thing I can say is I had alot of impacted wax but don't know for sure if this caused it.yes mine starts off quiet in the morning and then just gets worse and worse.I wore ear plugs to bed for years and have left the ears a little sensitive but I don't think I have hyperacusis any more.i would say your right because once I get to the office my tinnitus starts to crank up with the noises of the computers.sound from electrical items can change for me if I move ear or turn head which is really weird.

Thanks Michael

Wow this is similar to me and stress makes it worse especially recently with work deadlines. I think stress is a key factor

Definitely since this nightmare started my anxiety is high.stress about ears all the time.stress definitely heightens the problem. Hopefully someday they will be a cure for this horrible condition.

Verma54 profile image
Verma54 in reply to Michael8272

You’re not going mad I can assure. My life is hard as I find it a struggle as it emails me. Fear of spikes and just fear means anxiety and stress...however life has to go on...work is tough as am not same as I was ...I avoid many things ...sorry for dump of thoughts

I find when my mood is good I cope but with poor sleep it’s hard especially with 3 to 4 hours per nite ...I wouldn’t wish this on my worst enemy

Michael8272 profile image
Michael8272 in reply to Verma54

It's good to chat to someone with same problem, your right when mood is good the day flys but if it is bad you just want it to end.no I wouldn't wish this either on anybody.can I ask where you a anxious person before tinnitus started?

Verma54 profile image
Verma54 in reply to Michael8272

Yes I have had anxiety. I am not too strong and funny thing is today it’s flaring as I write....like you say ...now have the day ahead with flared ear...doesn’t help I slept badly and as live near Heathrow have planes which lets say isn’t great if you have T

Michael8272 profile image
Michael8272 in reply to Verma54

Do you use any noise to sleep at night?thankfully I can sleep without it even though noise is loud, sometimes wake up with anxiety and muscles jumping. Before tinnitus I have had crackling ear for 10 years but got used to it.how did you get tinnitus again?sorry for all the questions 🤔

Verma54 in reply to Michael8272

Nite clubs when I was young ...music exposure. It’s been there for 2 decades but only gets worse under stress triggers. Last wave was in 2016 when was on redundancy and then in Oct 2018. This time it’s worse and affects daily life ...I have seen ENT and others ..paid private but still get T...can’t go cinema. Flares a lot but do get respite when i sleep or distract ..last Xmas and NY was awful ...

You've had it a long time,my fear is that it is going to get worse, which at the moment would be hard, I have mine about a year and a half,I went on holiday last August and my tinnitus started to get worse in evening from then on. But this last month it has got worse but that could be a touch of hayfever to do with eustation tubes,I really don't know any more,I'v all bloods done and e.n.t twice and everything has come back fine, hearing test fine and no hearing loss, have you Any hearing loss?

Verma54 profile image
Verma54 in reply to Michael8272

Not really on hearing loss. Age related at high frequency ...I wouldn’t say it gets worse...it feels like it because you look for it and any change sets the spiral. I haven’t noticed until last October for nearly 2 years...I do worry if I lose my job ...it’s hard on my wife and son whose 11 as they now do most things without me ..for last 10 months ...even summer holidays ..cinemas. Shops etc . I can’t say it gets worse but it takes strength and also severity makes a difference

So it was Bearly noticeable for two years, atleast that gives me hope it can get better, really good chatting to you. This site is good

Verma54 profile image

Mate, it does improve but only when u habituate but sadly can trigger when you have major stress ....this site is excellent as this is like therapy as non T sufferers won’t understand what we do to avoid T

There was a program on TV with people with a similar condition and having others who can empathise doesn’t solve your pain but just makes it bearable knowing you’re not alone ..also it’s a hidden issue that no one else can see as it’s in your head / mind ...my ears are ringing or hissing but know it will be fine one day 🙏🏾

Michael8272 profile image
Michael8272 in reply to Verma54

Yes I think panic and anxiety are the real problem. I think I caused my problem by wearing ear plugs to bed for years and pushing wax in against the drum.if I was listening to something and move my head slightly the sound of what I was listening to would change in tone.whole thing is weird have you thought about trying this neuromod device in Ireland?

Mine is the opposite. Wake up with it but then drops down. Or some days it might decide to stay noticeable.

Michael8272 profile image
Michael8272 in reply to richard56

Mine definitely is opposite to this, I wake up and it's there and goes down until I start doing stuff, then it just goes crazy, it is crazy how many people's tinnitus is difficult.i work with a man who got his from shooting range in the army years ago and his dos'nt bother him at all.

jmallordturner51 profile image
jmallordturner51 in reply to Michael8272

I am definitely in your camp with what you describe. My T get's worse with activity and by the end of the day is usually roaring. I am thinking of giving upper cervical chiro a try as I think poor posture has really exasperated my problem. Did you say you had a head injury? You might want to have your neck examined.

Michael8272 profile image
Michael8272 in reply to jmallordturner51

Hi,I haven't had a head I jury, I think one of the other comments had one, when I first got tinnitus I started going to a chiropractor and have ever since, to be honest it hasn't really made any difference, the reason why I did go was because just before I got tinnitus I started getting sore necks and still do,I actually do this can play a role aswel. I have been watching some videos on YouTube about fixing my posture, so I am going to give it a try Dr.alan Mandela his videos are very good.i

I am more symptomatic when I stop and home for night - so balance issues & tinnitus kick off, quiet & fatigue is a trigger for mine - use meditation when I get home - then try to keep myself occupied with crafts. I have had problems with my neck for years - but exposed to construction noise & vibrations at place of work.

Michael8272 profile image
Michael8272 in reply to Vibe19

I do get alot of stiff necks aswel but doctor says it's all down to stress and anxiety. Everything these days is stress and anxiety, it's a easy way out for doctors.

Bose sleep buds and oasis sound machine is very good for relief and a homeopathic remedy called coffee is supposed to be good

You get with me when my sleep is less than 8 hours or when I talk loudly for a long time or increase salt

I get a vibration when I talk loudly sometimes

thadg11 profile image

Sleeping must be 8 hours a day and you will find the difference and decrease the sound very useful and reduce the salts

Michael8272 profile image
Michael8272 in reply to thadg11

I sleep not so bad, only thing is I wake up after 4 hours a odd time.i hav'nt taken salt in 4 years. Someone else said lack of salt can cause problems, I think it's better to stay away from salt.ears are a bit blocked the last few days aswel, so it could be just the time of year with allergies, really a hard condition to figure out

This used to be my situation, with the T not apparent upon first waking. Then for many months it stayed with me pretty much all the time. I've been wondering why I woke without it at times, so I could duplicate the conditions to hear what silence is like.

Oddly, I woke this morning at 3:50 am in anticipation of my wife's alarm and absolutely no T. None. But the T started in 10 minutes and was in full volume by 5 am. I am not imagining this or manifesting it because it gets even louder if I touch my face, push on my nose or exercise my jaw. If many of us wake without T, just what might be the mechanism that starts it? We all sleep with our eyes shut, so could it be the passage of light thru our eyes that starts the T? The nerves and brain related areas for sight, sound and touch are closely related.

I noticed my tinnitus first in December '16, and suspect use of various painkillers and anti-anxiety agents due to an L5-S1 herniated disc, with sciatica and a numb foot bottom. I also have DDD with stenosis. I also take a BP med. I was lucky and had longevity retirement. So I sit home in misery. Use of these drugs for pain and anxiety inevitably leads to ED, and I used an ED prescription in mid 2016 for a while, and later in 2017 for 3 months. Each time I used the ED drug I thought the side effect of tinnitus would go away. But, I fear these ED drugs, or a combination of drugs, will cause chronic T and possibly hyperacusis. I was told by a specialist in Canoga Park that it may be permanent and vascular in nature, and the smallest human blood vessels are located in the inner ears. They are seeing at least a new patient each week, presenting with chronic T, who used ED and BP drugs, possibly with painkiller medications.

I only mention the ED drugs because I want others to avoid using them. They might seem harmless and a neat thing to use when meds, work or social stress cause problems with interest, emotions and performance, but these drugs were not originally designed for recreation or as a band-aid for a true vascular problem. Stop or reduce the meds (except for blood pressure, please) and physically you will probably be normal.

My story and my two cents.

Go see a good cbt therapist that deals with tinnitus.. your reaction or relationship between noise & anxiety needs breaking.... ive had mine 36 years in the last 3 years it’s got a lot worse, louder than the car on a motorway journey.. it’s just loud, but I’ve mostly broken the bit where noise relates to my reaction I just acknowledge it’s a noise & yes sometimes it gets to me, but I’ll practice mindfulness, being calm and go back over cbt techniques to break the cycle into anxiety and round & round... and try TRT on nhs too .... but your mind is your best tool, don’t let it be your worst...

Verma54 profile image
Verma54 in reply to marc1974

Hi Marc. How effective is CBT?

marc1974 profile image
marc1974 in reply to Verma54

Very, it teaches you to put a clear divide in stress anxiety and noise like tinnitus, infant clarity in everything that causes emotions feelings, reactions, sensations... like tinnitus causes anxiety is too simple, it’s more in depth but they are linked.. like you I left school in 1989 & spent years in loud clubs but I had tinnitus already from the age of 7, as a child it was easy to habituate, as a teenager it was hell... it’s worse now at 46 than ever but I have the best tools in using CBT techniques for it & for most other things.. it’s a lot of practice & homework if you do decide to do cbt but after a year of practice I nailed it.. my tinnitus is not any better in pitch or volume today it’s really bad as I was using power tool ... I am letting it be & not letting the sound become a feeling or thought of anxiety.. there’s a book called mind over mood which is all about cbt teaching it’s really good ...

Hi, when I put this thread up,I didn't expect as many people to say they have the same problem because anybody that I know personally always say you'll get used to it .its such a awful condition and it is just mental torture, I'm starting to believe that mine gets worse because of stress and tmj, as the day goes on the jaw and nerves become inflammed and then it settles again at night with sleep and then starts again. Thats my theory

Verma54 profile image

Hi Mike - last week had 2 T free days but it’s now back. It definitely spikes my BP as days when wasn’t there had much lower BP and not hot ears. So looks like it’s vascular? Self diagnosing

heavydddd profile image
heavydddd

Yes exactly, same with with me....I'm pretty sure the brain repairs itself while sleeping (the better I sleep the more ringing goes away), but what I don't know for sure is what's causing the tinnitus itself. Mine gets so loud and has pressure when its loud. I've just got over vitamin a toxicity and extreme headaches. I'm hoping the tinnitus will eventually get better.

SarahJ1977 profile image

I'm like this too. Wake up with tinnitus barely noticeable, then by the time I get to work it's ramped up. I think mine is sensitive to noise, as I think driving in my car makes it worse and then continued sound exposure through out the day
