Does Pilates make your tinnitus worse?

I would value your opinions! I am a Pilates teacher and recently a client with tinnitus was advised that Pilates could make his tinnitus worse. When I enquired for more information, they replied "we have observed that in the majority of patients who have active tinnitus ie are suffering from tinnitus at that time, doing pilates has increased their tinnitus, not while they are doing it, but within a few days later or gradually, over a number of weeks or even months."

Have any of your contributors found that Pilates made their tinnitus worse?

Thank you in advance, Gwyneth Hinds from Lisburn, N.Ireland

Morning Gwyneth, I wondered who had informed your client about this - reading your note it notes "majority of patients" - was it a GP? I can 100% confirm the complete opposite! I started Pilates six months ago, trying to find a physical activity which is compatible with balance issues etc. I have had tinnitus for years, Pilates is perfect! it helps retrain your brain to distract yourself from the terrible noise in your head, plus quiet music in the background helps and has never made the tinnitus worse afterwards. Pilates for me is one of my coping strategies - I hope your client tries your class again.

Hi there Gwyneth,

I would say definitely no. It's a great distraction and endorphin booster.

It's certainly been my experience that pilates, and other exercise classes help with tinnutis.

Hi,

I've been going to pilates classes for the past 5-6 years. I don't believe that doing this has had any adverse affect on my T. Just to add, I really enjoy pilates.
