Scared of tinnitus

Hi everyone,

So when i was little i heared a low peep sound. When i asked my parents i they heared it too they were always like nooo..

I thought it was super strange but i just let it pass by bc i was little and you don’t really think about it then.

Now this week, this noice became worse and worse.. i have it for three days now and it’s driving me insane.. i feel so hopeless. Yesterday I went to the doctor and she said that it could be moisture behind my eardrum. So she gave me a nose spray.

I feel so desperate and i’m so scared that i would have to deal with this sound my whole life... I can’t do it anymore.

How old are you now Chloe?

If the noise has just got worse over the last couple of days, you should trust what your doctor says and hope that it fades shortly, which it probably will.

Follow your doctor’a advice and if it persists beyond that then ask for a referral to see an audiologist in your local hospital’s ENT department. Good luck!

Hi chloe, try to stay calm and I'm sure your doctor is right.it will fade. The worst thing to do is get anxious, it will only make you concentrate more on the noise. Try and do something that takes your mind off it.easier said than done.it will fade.

Thanks Michael

Hi Chloe

It is quite likely that your problem will go away on its own. Most of the people who discuss their issues on forums like these have been experiencing problems over a long period of time. You are not in this category. Trust your gp and stop reading too much into this.

It will go away.

Chance is it will go love ... hope it does for your sanity x

Don't worry about it Chleo as dwelling on it all the time just makes things worse. Keep using the nasal spray and it will most likely clear up. Until it does, keep yourself busy with hobbies and stuff and get outdoors as much as you can, as that also helps take your mind off it. I hope it disappears soon and remember to let us know how when it does! Best wishes.

Hi Chloe,

I too had it when I was about 14, I shared a room with my brother who snored. I wore wax ear plugs and got it after my ear got irrigated. I had it for about a week then it went away. Grant you I got it again at 48, but point is it left me when I was nearer your age. Try not to stress, carry on with your life as usual and before long it will fade away.

Take care x

Thank you all for your messages x Tomorrow i’m going to a specialist to see what’s realy wrong with me. I’’m still scared bc the hissing sound is still there and is becoming louder each single day.. Myself I think it is tinnitus bc I buyed a new pair of headphones last week and I was listening to the music very loud.. like I always do.. so i don’t really have hope anymore. I’m going to see what the specialist will say to me.. I just have to learn to live with it I think... x

I’ve just went to the doctor and there is nothing he can do for me.. he said i don’t needed to overreacting and just needed to stay calm. I’m so angry. He won’t send me to a specialist bc he thinks it would be over in a few weeks. And again.. i recieved a new nose spray. My hissing sound/peep sound is growing stronger each day and i don’t see the happy side of life anymore. I just want this to be over..

My story is similar.... I think i have always had it but was able to place it in the background. The past 3 to 4 days it has gotten louder and louder..... The thought of it never going away gives me terrible anxiety. I feel like I can't go on with it.... I feel like recent stress has brought it on 10 fold and that's why it has heightened. I made an Appt to see an ENT doctor to check for any underlying issues as I also recently had a bad sinus infection.... Will also see an audiologist. But I am literally scarred for my life.

Thanks for your reply.

I know your feeling, your not alone.

The last couple of days I had so many panic attacks.. it’s just so frustrating.

It’s like life doesn’t have any sence anymore. Really hopeless..

I’m still hoping that the sound will be going away.. but I doubt that honestly..

Don’t give up, we can get through this. X

Chloe

You mention panic attacks. Your anxiety and your catastrophic statements are making your tinnitus worse.

You have more control than you release. You need to start saying different things and your mind will believe you, you will become less anxious and then less tinnitus.

I’m not minimizing what you are going through as I went through the same feelings and THOUGHTS. I truly thought I would go mad bc of the tinnitus. And I would say these statements to people.

I eventually realized my thoughts were making it worse. So I then realized my thoughts could also make it better.

I began thinking and saying, “ I won’t go mad,” it’s no big deal,” “I’m in charge, not the tinnitus,”. After a few days it got better and I then realized that I DID have power over the tinnitus. I could choose to let it make me anxious which would worsen the tinnitus or I could decrease my anxiety, stop thinking about it, stop saying catastrophic statements etc., which all improved my tinnitus significantly.

Give it a try. Nothing to lose but your perception of the tinnitus. Be patient though.

Cheers

Richard

How are you doing 2 months later Chloe? Any improvement?

Hi everyone,

I didn’t really looked on this page anymore because I became more scared of the different things people said to me.

But now I’m back. I’ve been to different doctors in these last two months and they actually said the same things to me.

So I will explain my situation:

- I have tinnitus ( probably because of noise trauma) But the doctors said: If I don’t really pay attention to it, then I won’t really recognize it. I did a hearing loss test, to check if my ears were okay, and they are. It’s because I can hear too good, that I can hear my Tinnitus extra loud. When I’m around the age of 30, my hearing system will be badder and then I will not hear my Tinnitus anymore. I’m just dealing with Tinnitus through the days now and it is becoming a little bit ‘normal’ now. At some times I still have panic attacks but I’m just trying to stay calm and don’t pay attention to it. First I couldn’t sleep at all, but now I’ve buyed this Sleep/Wake up Lamp from sony and I swear, it helped me a lot!

When you are going to sleep you can choose the sound of rain or the ocean.

When you eventually fall to sleep, the sound will go over. Please when you have tinnitus, buy this lamp! It made my situation so much easier.

When you have any questions, feel free to message me! X Eline
