Unrelenting cough

Hello, my husband has cirrhosis and has had an unrelenting cough for a month now. The cough happens when he sits or stands but stops when he is lying down. There is no congestion in the lungs, so he is not coughing anything up. Is this a normal procession of the disease, could it be caused by ascites? TIA

Hi thereNot sure if there is any connection to your husband's cough, but my partner had a cough that went on for ages, at the time he was on 20mg omeprazol, was really worried because he had just come out of hospital after having varices, when he came off the omeprazol it went away, like I said this is just our experience, your hubby's might be something else.

Hope you get it sorted!

P.s. also yes when my partner had ascites, coughing was a regular thing.

It could be linked to his ascites and/or liver disease OR it may not be linked at all.

There is a specfic lung condition that goes along with advanced cirrhosis - Hepatopulmonary syndrome.

But, at the moment we still have a LOT of Covid rife in the community plus what they've labelled the 100 day cough / whooping cough (my Dad has had a constant cough for some months and saw his GP who did some tests and it came back as postive for Whooping Cough).

In someone with liver disease the immune system can be impacted and this can make clearing even common colds more difficult.

Your husband would need to see his doctor for a check up of his chest.
