If your liver disease wasn't due to alcohol then the arguments against such drinks (i.e. potential trigger, not demonstrating willingness to leave behind alcohol etc) don't exist and if your consultant said it's ok them it's ok. In pre-transplant stage when alcohol has been the cause then they are contraindicated and can actually lead to delisting from t/p list.

You should drink something nice like a mocktail ect. But if you like beer than id say it would be perfectly safe, but it might as consultant said make you more tempted to go back to old habits. i wish you all the best x

I myself have cirrhosis due to alcohol. I was diagnosed 20 months ago, NO alcohol or Cigarettes since diagnosed and all bloods and scans ok. I asked consultant about alcohol free beer he said it's OK but said it could give me that temptation of going back to my old habits. Also told by Hospital Nurse that it would not have any effect whatsoever so if your Consultant said it's OK then it's OK .

Hi

You say your bloods are ok now, but what were they when you were diagnosed with cirrhosis (alt/ast etc)

I didn't ask what my readings were but when consultant phoned for routine 6 months Consultantation he said my liver was functioning well and he was pleased with my bloods and results. Also lost over 3 and half stone with eating healthy and regular exercise. Plus ..No features of concern with my 6 month liver scans

I drink alcohol free beer and cider occasionally. I recommend Thatchers Zero and funnily enough Guinness zero !! I find the wines too sweet. The alcohol free gin is quite nice wirh plenty of ice lrmon and a good mixer lije Fevertree. I never had a drink problem in that I never drank much anyway but it is nice to sometimes have an adult drink !!

thanks for all your replies I have liver disease due to portal hypertension got to have another scan tomorrow with a dye bit anxious have any of you guys have liver problems because of the portal hypertension still don’t know much about the condition

Cirrhosis causes portal hypertension - not the other way round. Portal hypertension arises when the vast quantities of blood processed by the liver can't get through the liver due to the scarring (or other blockages) present and this causes a back flow of blood and increased blood pressure in the portal veinous system and this is p/h.

It is possible also to have portal hypertension without cirrhosis.

Hi thank you for the info I didn’t drink to cause the cirrhosis I have Crohn’s disease as well the doctors still can’t pin point how my liver is how it is I’ve had to take loads of medication for the Crohn’s disease and had surgery I think maybe it could be connected to the meds

With crohn's disease already it's possible your liver disease is also auto immune related (as Crohn's often is). My hubby has cirrhosis due to auto immune liver disease - he's life long t-total. His first major liver disease symptom was a massive variceal bleed (11 years ago) due to pprtal hypertension.

Hopefully with further investigation they'll discover what is going on with your liver.

My husband who is under QE was told definite NO alcohol free drinks as most do contain a tiny amount in when you read the labels so not good for your liver. He was also told not to eat anything with alcohol in and to be wary of sweets and thing like mouthwash. It is surprising where alcohol hides and if you have cirrhosis any alcohol is harmful so best to drink and eat clean if you get my meaning. 👍

HiI have cirrhosis and was told the odd few shouldn't make any difference. Guess it depends if you were alcohol dependent before. I am on transplant list and so far my bloods are bang on.

Take care x

You're on the tp list with good blood work? Compensated or decompensated? Sorry to be nosey, I thought you had to be fairly ill to be listed. Just comparing notes. 😉

I have no idea, they've never told me about comp Vs decomp. I'm guessing comp now as all my bloods are good, I exercise every day 2-3 times, eat well. I have ascites which is the only thing keeping me on the list at the moment.Don't get me wrong, last year I was luminous yellow and couldn't walk, so I guess I'm very lucky.

I guess I need to ask more direct questions of my gastro. I guess I'm stable, and not been referred for transplant workup. But I feel like something could happen anytime.
