Sadly, my mum passed away on Sunday evening with me by her side.
Mum was admitted to hospital 4 weeks ago following a large bleed. She was admitted and stabilized in ICU, before deteriorating further several times over the course of her four week stay. ICU and High Dependency did a fantastic job of caring for her and again stabilized her so that she could move to the Gastro ward, where she was mobilized and there were some discussions around her being discharged. Sadly, on Saturday I received a call to say one of Mums lungs had collapsed and the area had filled with fluid. Attempts were made to drain the fluid, but it had little impact as the area just refilled. She died peacefully with me by her side the following day.
My mum was 58 when she died due to pulmonary odema and alcohol related liver disease. My mums drinking became a habit. One after work became a bottle, which became taking another bottle up to bed with her. I have no doubt that she drank to mask depression. In her final days, all she wanted was the opportunity to live her life differently, but unfortunately it was too late. I have the upmost respect for those of you who have managed to stop drinking and create a new life for yourselves. Unfortunately the pull of alcohol was too much for my mum and she was unable to make that change which has cost her her life.
I would just like to thank everyone on the forum who has supported me by answering questions and sending me inbox messages offering support over the last 18 months. The forum and the Nurse Led Helpline has been a fantastic resource for my throughout Mums illness and we have asked for all donations in her memory to be sent to the Liver Trust ❤️

I'm so sad to hear your news. I was in a similar situation to your mum 4 years ago and told I had only months to live. I'm still here, fighting the battle.I hope you have help with understanding your mums illness. xxx

hi Alex I am so sorry for your loss! On a brighter note it was wonderful that you could be there for your mum. My dad has severe alcohol hepatitis, been sober for 6 months but his Health condition is not great. He lives in Romania I live in the UK and i am very concerned I might get a call from mum to say he’s gone . Sending lots of love and please do Take care of yourself 😘

So sorry to hear this Alex. I lost my husband 9 days ago from complications of alcoholic liver disease so know something of what you are going through. He too drank as a habit which got the better of him and he was desperate to carve out a new life for himself that was free of alcohol but he never managed it.

I am so sad to hear of your Mums story and her passing. You used the term the “pull “ of alcohol that is probably the BEST description I have heard or read. I was diagnosed 6/14/2019 in hospital 16 days decompensated alcohol cirrhosis. I’ve been compensated for a year or two now. Long story short it took me becoming so sick to finally quit.
I haven’t touched a dropped since . Just celebrated my 4 years sobriety 6/24/2023. I feel your Mums pain…the drink escalates and it is hell and suffering trying to stop. I am sending prayers to you and your family ,and all the folks who love your Mum.
