Hi, I think we are all learning on this forum and I am sure you will receive some great advice throughout!
In terms of ongoing liver care, we know a healthy diet as advised by the hospital dietitian is absolutely vital. It’s worth bearing in mind that this may vary from person to person and at different stages of the disease and needs to be person specific, considering different co-morbidities such as diabetes, kidney disease, obesity or malnutrition for example.
We know that snacks are important in between meals and before bed to provide additional energy. In terms of low sodium snacks, crisps and bread however, the options are quite limited to buy. What you choose, really needs to be low in saturated fats as well and free from lots of additives and high processing. (In some cases however, the dietician might advise you not to worry about fats and sugars as they just want to get the calories in so check with them first).
There are infant ranges of organic crisps in most supermarkets with very few ingredients in them with only a trace of salt.
Unsalted nuts are a great source of good fats and protein.
In terms of bread, I have not found anything that looks or tastes like bread with low sodium!!! One type of bread I found in a health shop, honestly tasted like an old innersole!!! 🥴.
White bread in particular is also highly processed. I make whole meal bread and use the most minimal amount of salt so that each slice has only a trace in. You do need a tiny bit of salt to almost stop the rise otherwise you end up with supersized loaf, a crust and a big hole in the middle!
Flatbreads are also an option with whole meal flour and high protein yoghurt in the mixture with very little baking powder or none if you want them crispier. You can make a lower fat, unsalted garlic and herb butter and put just a little on to keep the fat content low, make your own guacamole for good fats or hummus for protein etc. Making baked polenta or vegetable crisps could be a healthy alternative. I think you really can make whatever you want if you are creative.
Good luck, I’m sure others have some good pointers and there is information about diet on the BLT website.
(Apologies to any forum members who feel that food discussions aren’t relevant to liver disease)
Food discussions most certainly are relevent to liver disease . Great info !
Hi Lankylou, sorry to hear about your son. I suggest thinly sliced apple slices, slowly baked in oven and sprinkled with cinnamon; cool and keep in fridge. I like sesame seed crispbread (nice texture and tasty) with a slither of peanut butter or with some hummus. Bake slowly, slices of fresh or frozen butternut squash with olive oil+ garlic spray. Hoping this helps.
I love your ideas! I hadn’t thought of slicing apples with cinnamon, tried them today and they are delicious! Thank you
Oooh yes 😋
Drooling !!!
