Nausea - any remedies?

Hi all,

My dad is suffering from end stage liver cirrhosis and liver cancer and has recently had a very poor appetite and feels very nauseous.

I’m here to seek any advice on any remedies for the nausea? A nutritionist had mentioned that ginger could help - we’ve tried the little ginger shot drinks but so far that hasn’t done too much.

He has not been prescribed anything from his consultant for nausea - has anyone here had any medication for it?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thank you

Hi, I'm sorry your Dad has nausea - it is such a miserable thing to have. My Mum was prescribed Ondansetron for severe nausea. Please push for your Dad to be prescribed something - he shouldn't have to suffer - I'm surprised no-one has prescribed anything so far. Macmillan were a great help to me and my Mum when she was terminally ill with secondaries in her liver. I hope your Dad gets some relief from symptoms soon.

This is really helpful - thank you. Our consultant also suggested to talk to Macmillan, so I think that may be a next step for us. My dad was reluctant, but it feels it might be helpful for us all.

Thanks again, and so sorry your mum went through similar.

Thank you Alo123. I just wanted to add that Macmillan helped in many ways - providing a nurse to sort out a syringe driver (delivering an anti-emetic) when oral Ondansetron eventually failed to work anymore. Their helpline was also excellent and information on their website helped me understand the progress of the disease. A very kind radiographer at the hospital told me when someone is that poorly that things can change rapidly with new symptoms suddenly appearing - this really helped prepare me. I'm not saying this will necessarily happen with your Dad but my Mum became extremely confused with hepatic encephalopathy and almost seemed to have dementia at times, followed by a really bright day when visitors couldn't believe she was actually very ill. She spent a while in hospital but was able to return home where she died very peacefully. I can't praise Macmillan enough both for their support to my Mum and also me. I hope you will get similar support and help for your Dad, and you of course. Thinking of you. x

Hi I suffered with nausea and vomiting prior to my transplant, and I was prescribed, Cyclizine, which helped, but it did cause me drowsiness, so if he drives this may be an issue. Best wishes

Hi,

We are sorry to read your dad is so unwell.

Have you discussed his nausea with his clinical consultant? They may well be able to prescribe an appropriate anti sickness medication.

Also, is he under the care of a hospital registered dietitian? ( via a referral from the consultant) as there will be specific considerations he may have to make in his diet but this would be dependent on his stage of cirrhosis.

We would suggest caution regarding nutritionists advice if your dad has advanced liver disease and to take some guidance from the medical team who have a full access to his medical notes and liver history.

If you are in the UK you may want to call our nurse led helpline on 0800 652 7330 10am to 3pm, it sounds a very stressful time and we would be happy to listen and try to help.

Warm wishes.
