Aches in legs and Ankles post liver transplan?

Hi Everyone,

My husband is now a little over a month post liver transplant. He has been having aches in his ankles and legs. They prescribed him some nerve meds but they do not seem to be helping much. We are seeing his liver coordinator tomorrow but was wondering if anyone has had any experience or neurological issues post transplant? Or just aches in general that are not his incision?

Thanks in advance!

Hello 123AF! I have found that as some of my meds have been tweaked and reduced that I have had some firstly swelling and then aching! To stop the swelling they reduced one of the blood pressure tablets, then they decided to reduce the steroid ( Prednisolone ), to try and wean me off it, however that caused terrible joint pain and aching! Apparently some of the drugs start producing cortisol for you and your own body stops! So if they start reducing the drugs that do this if can take your body a while to start producing it again!

Of course I am not medically qualified but the info came from one of the Specialist Liver Nurses and I am Sure there are other reasonS this could be happening 🙏

Hi and thank you for responding!

He did stop he prednisone recently, I will bring this up with his nurse.

Thank you!

Hello I had my transplant in 2014, as for aches and pains of the lower extremities could they be caused by your husband is using his legs more after being laid up? I suffered and still do from very bad cramps, both legs and abdominal, and I mean to the point I feel sick, no one can successfully explain why or suggest ways of stopping it, I also find if I over exert myself I pay for it the next few days, jelly legs and generally feeling yuk, my Italian surgeon tells me to ease back on life and roll with the flow, rather than think I can still do marathons, interesting re the prednisone, I have been told I'm on 5mg a day for life?? but I have been on the damn stuff since 2001, small steps to a big recovery?

Hi Jumbot!

He does walk one to two times a day but the aches (he tells me) are not like being sore. This is still sound advice! Thank you for your response ❤️

The aches are something I have failed to explain especially to Doctors, I suppose one day there will be an explanation?

We have read that it could be a side effect of the immune suppressants and are hoping as he takes less it will subside. In the mean time he is going to see a neurologist too.
