Fatty liver or cirrhosis?

January 2020/ went to hospital for which I thought was a gallbladder attack, it was determined to be a bad case of gastroenteritis Blood work, ultrasound,CT Scan later , AST 48, small amount of Upper abdominal ascites, small amount of pelvic ascites (I had my period at the time) echogenic liver, hepatic steatosis, Impression: Fatty Liver or hepatic parenchymal disease-History of drinking last 10 years

Any thoughts would be appreciated, I go for Fibroscan tomorrow morning-does this sound as if I could have Cirrhosis? Would an US or CT scan pick that up?

Thank you so much-Obviously a bit nervous for results

Just to point out that the two figures you get from fibroscan are kPa (which is your 5.5 figure and is a great result showing no fibrosis), however, your CAP score reflects the amount of fat in your liver not inflammation (steatosis is fatty build up). So your 240 CAP reading would still indicate S1 fatty liver. You still need to take action to hopefully prevent this situation from worsening.

"About Your CAP Score

Your CAP score is a measurement of fatty change in your liver. Your healthcare provider will use your CAP score to find out your steatosis grade.

The CAP score is measured in decibels per meter (dB/m). It ranges from 100 to 400 dB/m. The table below shows ranges of CAP scores and the matching steatosis grade and amount of fatty change.

CAP Score Steatosis Grade Amount of Liver with Fatty Change

238 to 260 dB/m S1 11% to 33%

260 to 290 dB/m S2 34% to 66%

Higher than 290 dB/m S3 67% or more"

Hope that helps a bit more with what you've learned so far.

Katie

Thank you-Yes My Doctor got back to Me and told me just that, I also looked it up before he got back to me so I was aware of the fat in the liver, I ha e lost 20 pounds since the hospital evaluation, so I am sure it was worse in January than today-still working on losing another 10, I am 5’6 female that was over 170 and am now 149- can only get better from here-Thanks again-stay well!!

Good afternoon Leslee1123,

Welcome to this friendly, supportive forum.

It is not possible to guess at a diagnosis.

Do you have a follow up appointment arranged after your fibroscan ?

To diagnose and stage liver disease it involves a combination of scans/imaging tests, blood tests, clinical examination history taking and symptoms. All of these combined will enable the doctors to reach a diagnosis.

Good luck with your fibroscan tomorrow,

Take care,

Previous blood tests, while in hospital, revealed steatosis of liver and elevated lipids in blood. My doctor requested a sonagram of my liver and more blood work. She said steatosis meant I may have fatty liver disease, which she said can be controlled by diet. I get my results tomorrow.

I read an article about a book by Julissa Clay, "The Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease Solution". The author of the article said the diet and tips in this book improved his fatty liver disease. I ordered a printed copy of the book, and should get it next week.

I believe the key to control fatty liver disease is finding the correct diet with a list of things not to eat or do. This books has a specific diet determined after much research. I pray I am right.

I don’t think it’s cirrhosis but I strongly encourage you to take fatty liver seriously with diet and exercise jt can be reversed. I was a heavy drinker in college a little in my 20s never daily but definitely a weekend partier my liver enzymes stay normal to mild elevated my scans negative for fatty liver but I take it as a warning to slow down and I have a drink here and there but never more than two
