Oh Trish, i love Robin's. Thats a lovely photo. He/She could be looking for a new nesting place, as you said.

We've had quite a few Robin's around here lately, but we didn't know where they were nesting. Then yesterday my Hubby was talking to a neighbour across the road ( at a safe distance ).

Our Neighbour has a Robin's Nest underneath his Car Port.

He said his car is covered in Poop, But he don't mind, because he Loves Robin's as well. A few years ago we had a nest of House Martins underneath our Car Port,

Every time we went out, we had to duck .

They are so quick. They were like the Kamikaze.

Hey Trish,I like your Wellies.

Love. Glo.xx

Trish ,I think most men are all the same when it comes to strimming the Lawn edges. They leave them as wonky as a Donkeys hind Leg.

I don't like out of line Picture Frames either..They really irritate me..😚

Great photo Trish.

He could be looking for a nest site, but more probably food for his chicks

Trust you to have spotty wellies😊😊😊

Trish, no seed for chicks at nesting time. I scrunch up a fat ball with a sharp knife, like peeling an apple, and make sure there are no big bits that might choke a wee chick, or if you have any mealworms πŸ˜‹πŸ˜‹πŸ˜‹ they are top notch. I've just put some out for my Robin, to keep them going through the night😊

Words ( worms)🀣🀣🀣, are great, but chop them up into chick sized pieces. Soapy water on the lawn will have them scrambling to the surface. 🐍🐍🐍

I love him! We have at the moment, blue tits, great tits, goldfinches, green finches, nutter starling families, sparrows and those long tailed tits. They eat better than we do!

I keep feeding them, I love animals and they are all my babies, I name them and everything! Unfortunately I have been fighting a magpie which has appeared since we trimmed the hedge as we have several nests. Didn’t see him today but hoping he didn’t get the babies. I have been shooting him away when I see him. They eat better than we do as they only like certain makes of food!!

davianne
davianne
in reply to Owlie

Hi Owlie, just put out the feeders, and Bob, my oh so friendly Robin, came to the feeder before I had even put it back on the hook. He grabbed a beakful of scrunched up fatball, and flew up the garden to our gazebo seat, and there, waiting for him was a wee chick.....so happy to see that😊

We have Magpies and Jackdaws, both of whom will take chicks, given half a chance. I just send Teddy up the garden to chase them off. I think you mean't shooing, not shooting them away.

Excellent names!!

We used to have 2 chickens visit named Parsley and Thyme.

Thyme was very gentle and would be happily alongside us when we were weeding pecking at the worms and grubs. Parsley was a different story, she was very confrontational and had huge feet that went about the garden on a rampage scratching up flowers and plants.

My wife had to chase her off with a brush and parsley even used to fight the brush and also try to get round the brush to have a go at my wife.

So beware, they are not all cuties! :-(

in reply to alfredthegreat

Funny you should raise the subject of the different personalities your two chickens Alf

We had to renamed one of our chickens to Houdini because he had a great knack of escaping and flying over 6 foot high hedge into a heavily overgrown wooded bushed area. I can remember one particular day when I had to dress myself in full PPE clothing including safety glasses and gloves before crawling on my hands and knees through the bushes and wooded branches to drag Houdini out ! At one point I actually got my legs tangled which to be honest wasnt funny at the time.

Popeye and Olive Oil were always

digging deep holes in all the flower beds but to be truthful I loved em to bits!'Pegleg was always visiting me in the kitchen whilst Twisted sat on the window cill looking in....

So Owlie be aware they can be mischievous and they do require a lot of care plus large enclosed run with chicken pen which requires lots of cleaning out and warmth in the winter months. I wish you well!

Thanks Alf for sharing your story!

😊

God I’m good today! 🀣

Not as good as that chicken crossed with a spotty pig would be! LOL

Fat balls and mealiworms ordered! 2 robins have moved into the garage and we beleave are now nesting in an old wicker cd racks in the corner ! Our garage camera has been re ajusted so that we can see them flying in and out through the window which they've been doing all morning... ahhhh

Thursday 23rd ....

PS we're going to see if we can transfer some photos from camera onto my FB page as things progress.

Wow Trish, that's great news, you are very blessed. My Robins are nesting in my neighbours hedge, even though I put up a Robin nest box, and my feeders are their "go to" restaurant. As compensation, I have seen a pair of goldfinches showing interest in the Robin nest box, so.......fingers crossed🀞🀞.

I also saw a Jenny Wren this morning, looking for food. She took a mealworm, and flew into the shrub border, so, may be nesting there 🀞🀞

Great names Trish. When I lived in Oxfordshire, I had an open garage, and I used to get swallows nest up in the eaves every year. I carved a sign that sad "Swallows Rest" for the beam on the garage.

I doubt it's still there. I also carved a house name sign "Trevalyan" for the gates, and they renamed the house Greenacres. Trevalyan was my Kennel Club registered breeders name, used on the pedigree of puppies I bred.

Last summer I met a wonderful lady called Linda Summerell whilst visiting my daughters local pub. Immediately we realised there was a bond between us and have become close friends! This morning from out of the blue I received a small book of poems that belonged to her dad! The books called "A Shropshire Lad by A E Housman." First edition published in 1896....this copy is dated 1923...almost 100 years old! Such a beautiful gift to have received which I shall now enjoy reading this afternoon.

Here's the first poem I read....

I heard the tune he sang me,

And spied his yellow bill;

I picked a stone and aimed it

And threw it with a will.

Then my soul within me

Took up the blackbirds strain

And still beside the horses

Along the dewy lane

It sang the song again:

"Lie down, lie down, young yeoman;

The sun moves always west;

The road one treads to labour

Will lead one home to rest

And that will be the best!

Hope you enjoy!

Love Trish x
