Has anyone suffered liver damage which has been attributed to green tea - either in supplement form or normal tea infusion?

Hi, personally no but you have to be very careful with supplements, I don’t take them. This chap had too much green tea...nutraingredients.com/Articl...

Thanks Owlie, Just that my Autoimmune Hepatitis came on very suddenly and severely and was asked about herbal teas, doctors seemed to think it was a "drug" type trigger but at time I did not know green tea could have been a trigger so did not mention to consultant. I had only recently started drinking it before this disease and only later found (googling) that green tea can harm liver. I was leaving it a long time to steep, believing it was going to do me so much good.... Am going to mention on next consultation.

At one of my earliest consultations to determine that I had AIH (with GP) he asked if I was a keen gardener and grew a lot of herbs! I thought he must have noticed my dirty fingernails but now realise he was checking to see if I might have been imbibing something harmful.

Hi Poorly - why - what do you see? I’m having all sorts of trouble with profile pics of some people and some people becoming (hidden) - all on Notifications though not on threads. My profile picture is just a model plane 👍

In fact in Notifications you are identified as “hidden”!

Ignore me, I am going utterly mad. I have not used this site often and mistook MY profile picture for YOURS! It was the potentially fatal cup of green tea I was looking at. Been cooped up here a bit too long I think! Sorry for utter confusion!

Hahahahaha 😂👍

Except do feel the same at the moment - wish I could just get in a car and go somewhere - anywhere. Have had to put my daughter on my insurance so she use our car for our shopping etc which means it gets to have a run out - lucky thing 🤞.

That's nice for your car Miles! I give mine a 2 minute drive up and down the road every few days to avoid the brakes seizing up and a flat battery!

Trish 😉

Ah no! Another confusing issue... no doubt my clumsiness has given me cloaked status.... will have a look at...

Haha I bet it isn’t you that’s done it - I don’t know of any Setting that will do that - but then again there’s a lot I don’t know 😀.

Think you are right, no setting found to obscure my identity on notifications. Thanks for exchanges, amusing! Off for late dinner and slobbing out in front of telly now.. Nighty night.

Unsure if it was a coincidence or not but I started taking matcha tea shots and developed really itchy legs. I stopped taking the tea and when my liver levels were checked they were raised and over a period of time I was diagnosed with autoimmune hepatitis and PBC. May have just been a coincidence however I definitely think there was a link. I have reverted to just drinking 1/2 cups of green tea a day instead.

Sorry to hear this and thanks for your reply, very interesting! Also listening today to Radio 4 about autoimmune problems which we know largely affect females and the possibility that having two X chromosomes gives us rather aggressive immunity ... sometimes getting out of hand hence autoimmune disease. The XX chormosomes being suggested that is actually helping women who contract the C19 virus to have better outcomes than our poor menfolk. Not sure if absolute medical proof exists on this theory, but have heard about this a few times - the XX link to autoimmune disease.

Yeah I read an article on this before regarding the increase in females with autoimmune conditions due to the nature of pregnancy. This isn’t the original article that I read but something similar. google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.thea...

Basically our bodies are in constant battle with themselves due to the nature of turning on and off our immune response not to reject a baby growing in the womb and being seen as a foreign body.

Good morning PoorlyLiver,

Thanks for that. Ah yes, the green tea supplements are mentioned... seemingly drinking green tea as normal infusion is ok, but I was having mine very strong (steeped) .. so was wondering if anyone else has had same sort of experience.
