Hi I'm new here and have just been diagnosed with cirrhosis. I'm obviously petrified. If I stop drinking completely eat a balanced diet and really look after myself can I lead a normal life? I've always been healthy and this news has really shocked me. I'm happy to do whatever it takes. Just need some hope. Thank you nicky

Hi Nicky/Chimma,

Welcome to our wonderful forum of friendly, knowledgeable people.

You can still live a near normal life with cirrhosis, if you look after your liver.

You've made a good start by ditching the cause of the problem, alcohol, although there are other reasons for cirrhosis.

If you eat a healthy diet, with no salt, and little sugar, which with convenience food, can be hard to do, then this will help your liver.

Have you been told of the stage of cirrhosis you have? If you have had a fibroscan, then your cirrhosis will have been graded.

If you have any more concerns or worries, then just write a post, and we will try to help you, but giving detailed blood results for comment is not allowed, because we are not doctors, just people with liver disease, or caring for someone with it.

Please try not to worry,

David

Hiya honey. It's great that you've joined us for support. As David said, we can't give medical advice. Best people for that are your Doc, or give the British Liver Trust helpline a call.

Try not to worry. Of course, eating healthily and a bit of exercise is important, but so is being kind to yourself...and talking.

We're all here to listen. 🤗xx

Hi Nicky

Welcome!

As David has said, it all depends on what Stage you are at.....

Hope you can keep up the no drinking because that, imho, is the biggest help you can give your body...but I’m not medically trained at all and just speak from experience. My experience being that I didn’t heed any of the early “warnings” until I was told to Stop drinking or else! The “or else” had a magical effect on me - can’t think why 😏. Had I stopped at the first warnings I may not have ended up needing the Transplant I was I the end so lucky to have!

Good luck and do try and find out more from your Consultants - they are the only ones who can really advise with some authority .

Hi Nicky , I,'m new on here too and very pleased to have found it. I have cirrhosis and nearly bled to death but that was 7 years ago. I obviously haven't had a drink since and never will but I'm absolutely fine and live a normal happy life , just without the wine which is no hardship. From being very I'll to how I am now is incomparable so please dont worry , you'll be fine and healthy soon , take care xx

Hi 👋 Nicki, Welcome to the family.

As for you, the shock you’ve received is the same as all of us, scary eh. Now take a deep breath in and out. You’re going to find it a real maze, so for now it’s one day at a time okay 👌. Liver disease is very complex, you will need to gather information slowly. And joining us was your first great step. Try to concentrate on your dietary needs first, we can help with hints tips etc, you have plenty of online options directly from the forum links.

As you said yourself no alcohol.

Don’t eat processed foods or any

(white foods) eg flour, bread, rice,

Don’t worry 😉 you will soon find the good alternatives. We’re all becoming experts at reading 📖 food labels, looking 👀 in particular for fat, salt & sugar levels, keep them low. Keep up exercise levels, difficult at present I know with the dreaded virus. Well before I put you into overdrive 🤣 I’ll leave you for now, take care. Chrissie x

Welcome you have already had some good advice. So for now I just send a huge socially distant hug. You have come to the right place. You can breathe again and be secure in the knowledge that you have found the best liver friends ever. Stay well. Congratulations on being able to say you will STOP drinking. Power to you. The force is with you. Jaycee
