Hi and welcome to our forum,

GGT can be raised for different reasons, but can also a potential indicator of how much alcohol a patient drinks. Only your own doctor can interpret your specific test result, as reported reference ranges differ between laboratories.

It would be a good idea to discuss with your doctor about getting an ultrasound scan, that will give more information about your liver function.

It is also important to be open and honest about how much you are drinking, and get some support and advice from your doctor. Binge drinking 10 pints in a session will be putting your liver under pressure.

Here are links to our publications 'Alcohol and liver disease' and also 'Liver disease tests explained' that may be of use to read prior to seeing your doctor.

hi-and welcome. Treat this as a wake up call. It was high GGT that first alerted me to possible fatty liver. It was 180 7 years ago. It took me months of abstinence and diet to get it down to about 160. I was then diagnosed with fatty liver and it later rose to 250 and at one point over 400. Moderated drinking a lot and eventually got it down to 90. It's the only enzyme test that's been elevated for me. I would cut out the binge drinking-12 pints is about 24 units in one day the max should be 14 units in a week. The medication is probably not helping. I would seriously cut down and get tested gain in 6 weeks or so. GGT is quite a volatile test..it should come down with a bit of care.

As per the above comments, eat healthily and exercise and get weight down as well if necessary, makes a huge difference.

I had a reading of 150 12 months ago previously 60 a few years prior. Spent 6 weeks worried sick, had ultrasound fortunately all was fine and after 4 weeks abstinence came back to 45. Was a warning big time I still drink probably too much at weekends but makes me think. The ultrasound guy said they are very volatile. Good luck.

Hi Dreamkiller

I too have an ongoing up and down GGT readings that have reached 298 a couple of months ago. I've undergone 3 CT scans MRI, Ultrasounds, fibroscan, camera up and down plus monthly blood tests for almost 2 years.

I've been informed I do have an autoimmune disease of somekind but there still not sure exactly what yet!

I do occasionally have one fruity gin with ginger ale maybe once every couple of months as a treat but otherwise I'm a none drinker.

My recommendation to you is to completely stay off drink, eat healthly and exercise! In the meantime please try not to get to concerned and good luck

Take care my friend.

Hi There.

Just wondering, have you been tested for Alpha1? My hubby was initially having high GGT readings. Took six months for them to discover he had Alpha1. This is not always tested for.

Hi Carmik

Thank for your note! I'm guessing not to your question as the symptoms I'm having do not relate to that of Alpha 1 but again thank you for asking !

May I wish you a nice weekend
