Does anyone else get tummy upsets

My husband keeps getting really explosive tummy upsets is this common with liver disease.

So between not sleeping and the upsets he is pretty miserable.

Is your husband taking Lactulose to help prevent/reduce HE ? When I first teceived my cirrhosis diagnosis, I was prescibed Lactulose but as I changed my diet to include loads of fruit and veg, it resulted in numerous urgent dashes to the bathroom. I no longer take Lactulose and still manage the required 3-4 toilet visits a day through diet but dont have urgent explosive episodes now. However I have never had HE so doctor was OK with me discontinuing the Lactulose which might not be the case with your hubby. Hope he manages to get it under control soon one way or another. There is nothing worse than having to plan an outing around where the nearest loo is ! Take care.

He is on lactulose and try as I might I am struggling to get him to eat enough vegetables. He isn’t eating as much fruit as he was in fact I am amazed there is anything to expel.

He has been eating loads of sweets and biscuits something he never did before his diagnosis.

I have to get him to Queens Medical Centre in December and I cannot see how he will Male the trip.

When I left for work this morning he looked terrible and quite confused I am worried now.

If he's on lactulose then its doing what it's designed to do and keeping the bowels empty. "Lactulose is a laxative taken to treat constipation (difficulty pooing). It is also taken to help a severe liver disease called hepatic encephalopathy."

Is he also taking Rifaximin? Sometimes the GP won't perscribe it as it's expensive but it might help with the confusion.

If he's at a later stage of liver disease then fruit and veg isn't a priority. But high protein food is. Is he losing muscle mass? You might want to speak to a nutritionist but you could try protein whey powder, and unprocessed meat and fish.

Finally be careful with salt.

As soon as he was diagnosed I have reduced his salt, he has protein drinks etc and I try to give him nutritious meals that he sometimes eats or I throw away. He is yet to see the neurologist so no mention been made about encephalopathy yet. The GP has spoken to me says as long as he is drinking and peeing no need to alter meds but if continues then they will need a sample. I think we will take one anyway on Friday just in case.

He often gets taken unawares by urgently needing the loo but this has gone on for three days. Usually after a day of sitting on the loo it all seems to calm down for a few days.

I can sympathise. I definitely had the same, however I also suffer with Coeliac Disease and IBS. The worst was that it started getting really really sore. Really unpleasant. Hope he gets sorted.

Hi Bs1524,

With your husband's growing list of symptoms, I can understand how you must be extremely concerned.

Although Friday isn't long away, I hope that somehow you can get him to be seen sooner.

It's so difficult when they refuse to cooperate but you know that they need medical attention.

Quite possibly pronto.

The liver makes enzymes that break down foods in the gut. So try cutting out foods that have caused a reaction. It may take a while. To find out what they are. Mine are egg, dairy, pork products, yeast, aubergine and soya. It could be this problem.

He is eating much at at although I did get him to eat most of a jacket potato and he fancied beans probably not a good choice but better then nothing.

Hi,

Could the GP come out to assess him today? as well as being able to review him to see if this is liver related, they could also send some stolol samples off to check for infection.

We hope he starts to feel better soon

I have tried to get him to agree to my calling GP we are seeing GP on Friday he wants to wait I think he is denial about his condition
