Vitamin Supplements

Cheers to all,

Last week I asked if any of you supplemented with vitamins etc. Today I saw my specialist and he has suggested a children's multivitamin. Listing the brands recommended won't do you much good as I am in Canada but he walked me through the importance of managing vitamin and mineral absorption as malnutrition is a very real threat to cirrhotics. You can appear well nourished but not have the requisite complex of essential vitamins and minerals. Under no circumstances was I to take a one a day adult vitamin due to the potential of toxic build up. No one element is to exceed 100% of a daily recommended dose. In particular cirrhotics burn through B6, B12 and D. K is good if your platelets are low and you bruise easily. My doctor suggested dividing the children't dose between morning and night and taken with food to enhance absorption. He also reminded me of the importance of a late night snack. Tonight I had toast, peanut butter and fat free milk.

Cheers, Liz

That's Interesting.

I told my hepatologist this week that I take a daily multi-vitamin tablet and he just said, that's fine. Didn't ask which vitamins were in the tablet or dosage so I assumed it was fine for cirrhosis sufferers.

I also take prescribed Thiamine 3 times daily.

OMG I am a patient for monitoring at TGH and I love the team there! How crazy--we've probably sat opposite one another in the blood lab and not known! This anemia is irritating but I'll get through it. Platelets have bottomed out and just feel so down but could be worse. Cheers, Liz

That’s amazing that you are being monitored at TGH! You are in very GREAT hands. Before my transplant I was being looked after by Dr David Wong. Sorry to hear your feeling down. Give yourself a break - you are doing everything that you can do. Just know you are NOT alone. If I can help in anyway just ask!

Take care 🦋
