I know even living with portal hypertension/variceal bleeding etc is stressful but I wonder about the impact of stress on the condition...anyone had any info or experience about stress causing or being a main factor in causing a bleed? Thanks, Gemma

I don't think stress will contribute to any worsening of portal hypertension or risk of bleeds. Portal Hypertension isn't like normal high blood pressure which can get elevated with stress, PH is purely due to the fact that the blood that would normally flow easily through a healthy liver can no longer do so due to damage and blockages within the structures of the liver, blood therefore 'backs up' in the system and tries to find alternative routes around the liver/body hence the increased blood flow in smaller veins of the oesophagus which were never designed to carry such capacity (the walls then bulge causing the varices). No link to stress as far as I am aware.
