Low BMI of 12 and alcohol?

I have a very low BMI (12) and have been drinking one bottle of wine a night for a couple of years now. I am starting to fall, loose muscle weight, my eyes are becoming dry and my finger and toes nails are white. My hands also shake and my speech is mixed at times. Do you think I could have a damaged liver?

Hi Tcup. Well, I'm not a doctor but I would say that if you have been drinking a bottle of wine every night for a couple of years and you have all of those symptoms then I would say that it's fairly obvious that your body is not happy. It would be a good idea to go to your GP and tell him of your symptoms and how much you've been drinking and tell him that you are worried that you may have damaged your liver and request some blood tests. I agree with Alfred. I suggest that your low BMI plus the drinking aren’t helping you. You have to be prepared to stop the drink. The dr can help put you in the right direction for both the low weight and drink problem. Please be straight with him/her. I think you may have a lot to do but we are here to help.

Excellent advice which I can only echo. See your Doctor and explain your worries, be honest about the drinking as they can refer you for help with that as well as tests for your liver. Let us know how you get on, Owlie

Based on what you have told us, we would suggest you consider seeing your GP as soon as possible.They will be able to investigate your symptoms and liver function.

If you are, or have ever been, alcohol dependent or an alcoholic, discuss this with your doctor. In these circumstances it is important to get medical help to give up drinking, as stopping suddenly can, in some cases, lead to severe withdrawal symptoms, including hallucinations and seizures. There are many sources of support and help they can give you or direct you to.

But please also consider speaking with him or her about a possible eating disorder. With a BMI that low, depending on your age and frame, anorexia could also be contributing to your symptoms. I am curious as to what is stopping you from going to see a doctor?

It would seem that you are concerned - this is good, but one really needs to see a doctor to get the best information and treatment options.

Often enough changes in behavior - quit drinking, eat healthy, etc are what is needed, for some there is a need to be treated for an underlying disease that is harming the liver and only a doctor can tell what would work best for you..
