Coffee and Liver Pain

Hi everyone, hope you’re all doing ok.

I have previously asked this question but just wondered if there was any different thinking available now.

I am fully aware that coffee is considered to be good for the liver and have read several studies in this but my question is a little different...

Is it physically possible that coffee could induce liver pain? I understand that the liver cannot feel pain but as it swells and presses against the surrounding capsule it can cause discomfort. So can a liver swell (for example after having coffee) enough to cause pain?

I have been having RUQ pain for a long time and gave up drinking alcohol and coffee as a result. I tried coffee on a couple of occasions and within an hour of drinking it I get an episode of pain that last for 24ish hours.

Any thoughts gratefully welcome.

Yes coffee is good for the liver. Dont know the answer to your problem but Maybe you need to experiment with the strength you drink it? If you take it with milk and a little sugar or sweeteners, try removing them? Or a weaker coffee and less of it.... half a teaspoon? Good luck

if you are in pain after drinking coffee, look to what else you have in the coffee water milk sugar, saccharin, stevia, also try cold back coffee it's not as bad as it sounds

I've heard coffee is good too. I have Nash with fibrosis caused by meds from drs. My liver is very enlarged and my consultant said it will stretch the capsule around it which causes the pain. My spleen is also enlarged. Take care Lynne

Hi farranccc,

My husband is the one with cirrhosis.

He is not much of a coffee drinker, but he is big on Coke - his caffeine of choice.

I think you have gotten some good advice from others on here. The only thing I might add is check with your doctor's office and let them know what is going on and see if they have any other suggestions.

Hello, saw you mentioned your hubby loves coke. I did too and miss it dearly. I saw a few days ago it was mentioned that those with cirrhosis would be better suited to avoid carbonated beverages. Why, I have no clue but it was claimed it increases the chance of HCC. Just wanted to put it out there. Wishing you both the best.

My wife does get RUQ pain with instant coffee (gluten and dairy also) and was told to try grounds and this works. We are all different, but not a difficult experiment to try!
