Reducing Spironolactone

Hi Friends, My doctor has suggested lowering my Spiro from 75 to 50 as my clinical results have shown good improvement. Has anyone reduced their diuretic then had to go back up. I really don't want ascites back again....getting drained is no party.

Mine were constantly changed, Spiro and fusemide. Eventually my ascities cleared up after 2 years, so I am familiar with the pleasure of being drained. 14 litres was the most and I can think of a better way or two to spend a day. The oedema remained until the transplant, so I was left on changing doses of fusemide.

With me, the high doses, well above 75, were impacting my kidney function.

Fingers crossed that you keep the ascities away.

Mark.

Thanks Mark. I'll report how I get on. Day one so far so good. My kidneys are showing stress with my creatinine levels so he wants to try. I already have low blood pressure and Lasix was making it go too low. 70/50 was my average and it made me feel weak and dizzy. Aside from peeing for Canada (which is the intent) I don't have any noticeable effects from Spiro save for the kidney effect.

Yes, mine were often dropped completely then reinstated. Its good to give the kidneys a break so if yiou can get by on a lower dose then fab.

I'm game to give it a shot. It would be nice to have a night's sleep without getting up! I just really really don't want ascites again. My doctor told me to weigh myself daily and get back on the higher dose if I am gaining weight particularly ankles and middle.

Hi Liz,

I also was initially drained, aboutsix years ago, and have had good results with a daily dose of 50 mg of Spironolactone keeping the fluid retention at bay.

The only times I experience ascites building back up is if I miss a few days of medication or overindulge in fatty salty foods, something usually easily rectified by cleaning up my diet and getting back on schedule. Best of luck to you.

Thanks Karen. I'm on day 3 and so far so good but watching my diet reeaaaaaaly closely and reduced my 8,436 cups of tea/coffee a day to a reasonable 6. Okay, 8. Cheers, Liz

Hi there. I was put on 200mg of Spiro when I first had ascities which had to be uped to 300 to make a difference. I went back down to 200 when the ascities reduced. I don't often take that now, sometimes I can forget but also I don't think it's always required at that level now. In January my pharmacist remarked that 200mg was quite a high dose. I explained I don't take that amount everyday and was thinking I might cut it down further. She agreed with me doing that. I think if your gp's suggesting taking a bit less it shouldn't cause any problems. It can always be increased again. The best scenario I imagine is finding the lowest dose that deals with the fluid and try keep side affects to a minimum. Best wishes.

Hi Coralsun, I am sure hoping to hardly need any. I really really don't want ascites back. I am watching my ankles and belly plus weighing myself daily and really watching my diet. I'll post how it goes after a couple of weeks. Smiles, Liz
