High ALT blood results and docs requested more tests and stomach scan!!! I’m so worried

Hi I am so so worried, I had a call off my doctors surgery today saying my blood tests are back and are showing high ALT levels and the doctor wants me to go back for further tests and is referring me for a stomach scan. I am so worried as I suffer from severe anxiety and have over the years turned to alcohol as a coping mechanism. I can’t sleep or eat. I certainly don’t feel I can go into work as my mind is racing.

Hi;

I am in a similar position, in that I have anxiety (Generalized Anxiety Disorder) and am waiting for a doctor’s appointment today, with troubling symptoms. It’s been a tough few weeks for me and I am expecting it to last longer as I expect the doctor will order more tests today.

I don’t know if I can offer any advice except maybe think about what questions you would like to ask your GP and make another appointment. Questions like what type of scan have they ordered? What would the results indicate? What do they think the raised ALT means? Is there any help they can offer for your anxiety in the meantime?

I know it’s hard, but remember that ALT can be raised for many reasons (not always serious, not always liver related) and it is good that your doctor is investigating and they need to know the complete medical picture before they can give you more certain answers- I am sure once you have these, things will be a little easier.

Worried, it's a tough time when we learn that we have to face the music. I was in a very similar state about a year ago. STOP the alcohol while you can. I've been sober nearly a year and still have some mild discomfort but things are better all in all. I've had several rounds of blood work and everything is now in the Normal range. Sticking with a non inflammatory diet cleared up my alcoholic fatty liver and the enlargement. The alcohol is probably what has caused the elevated ALT. Try to relax I know it's a trying time and things can seem bleak, but most people are not as bad off as they first think. I went into panic mode as well, had numerous rounds of blood work, 2 ultrasounds, CT scan, upper GI, Hydascan, and a Fibroscan. Drove my doctor nuts and spent a pile of money. Each time I go back they tell me I'm fine. The only thing that can give your liver a chance to heal is to stay off the booze and eat a healthy, fresh diet. Best wishes!
