Slightly high liver enzymes

Hi I’m 51 years old , I had my blood work done in November 17’ liver enzymes came back slightly elevated . So I was told to loose weight , dr put me on contrave who’s is a diet pill , I lost 60 lbs . She checked lived enzymes 2 more time within the 6 months and the stayed the same didn’t go up anymore or down . So I’m thinking could it be the diet pill that didn’t let them drop? Now she’s sending me for a ultra sound 😕

Diet pills a tricky and most physicians feel that they help cut fat throughout the body. However, do not cut deep fat, which is deep fat you find imbedded in the internal organs. To me it makes sense that you wouldn't see much of a change. The ultrasound will be good to gauge the amount of hepatic steatosis you have. I would try a very healthy diet, not alcohol and some good exercise to see if maybe that drops enzymes in a few months. A diet pills isn't going to be a magic pill that gets rid of the problem.

Thank you for your reply . I did loose 60 lbs while on these diet pills . It turned out my elevated enzymeswas not from the pills , I went for my ultra sound and I have gall stones and a little bit of a fatty liver (which I’m sure was worse before the 60lb weight loss). I feel so much better though thank you again.

Depending on exactly what liver enzymes are raised it can signal certain other liver conditions. Has she checked you for all other liver issues and checked for all antibodies etc? To me - not knowing that much about your condtion/history - it seems a bit weird/high-handed to assume it's weight related without checking for all other possibles as well. I would ask what she has and has not checked for.

I have a very fatty liver with a little fibrosis. I was also given diet pills and Metformin. The diet pills were ones I used in the past and didn't lose anything. As a matter of fact, I was tried on numerous diet pills that didn't work at for me.

The Metformin did work however, which wasn't surprising. I had used the diet shot Saxenda, which is similar to Victosa for diabetes. I lost weight on that but had injection site reactions. So I have been diagnosed with metabolic syndrome, which in my case is the cause of my fatty liver. I've lost 28 lbs and actually feel so much better, but liver is not ok yet.

I've done extensive reading and have learned what I should and shouldn't be eating, and also that my liver won't repair itself in a couple of months. I expect it to take a few years to get well, if ever.

I've learned to eat a lot of leafy greens, bitter veggies and beets. Lemon water and grapefruit are good. I need to cut back on a lot of fruit because of the way it's metabolized, but I can have some.

Absolutely no more alcohol, soda, cookies, cakes, or any sweets. Anything with corn syrup is just as bad as alcohol. Unfortunately in the USA all our food is tampered with, including fresh meats and veggies. So even when eating a very strict diet, it still hard really be eating right.

I'm not even sure that my liver will heal, but at least now I know how to care for it. It's still working for me and I still have a chance. I'm 54 years old and not ready to go yet. I think with the changes I've made I can save my liver form further damage and maybe repair most of what's been done.
