My 1st liver offered wasn't right and i want right for the 2nd one but then the 3rd one came along and after nearly five years all is going very well. It WILL happen soon, stay strong and keep positive and the right one just for you will soon be here xx ♥️

I've just read, well done Chelle. I know your family aren't with you. Do you have someone there with you?

I was talking to my local MP last Friday, about your case. (No names mentioned) I was saying how much Alcohol-related liver disease puts such a strain on the NHS and how someone in your case who needs that transplant keeps on getting pushed to the back of the queue when it comes to available livers, as there's always someone in more urgent need. If there were less alcohol-related transplants, then there might be more livers available for people such as yourself. I've managed to talk my MP into visiting the local Liver ward up at our hospital to get a greater understanding of the problem.

Anyway, I digress. I've got everything crossed here for you and hope it's the real deal and that you get to have this transplant that you both want and need so much.

Good Luck Chelle.

That was a bit harsh Richard.. its not about who has alcohol related cirrhosis or genetic or any other type, its about suitability etc.. i find your remark quite offensive.

I have ALD , 10 years on 22 June this year . Abused and kicked around and hospitalised by my now ex husband of ten years. It was my escape from the anxiety i had to live with day after day. If i had had the knowledge and support i have now it could have been different.

So many have had transplants on this forum un alcohol related so why you had to say that i find is an indirect kick to people like me when you know not of the reason behind it .. i could never post what you have. Awful...i don't know who you think you are but your no better than anyone else even if you think you are .i have a good mind to report you for this.

in reply to Millie09

I didn't mean to sound harsh, but what I'm trying to say is that if Alcohol abuse was tackled much better in our society the'd be less people in need of a transplant due to alcohol-related conditions, of course it's all about the suitability or the organ. But it's also about the saving of human life and quality of life. By the time a person liver becomes so damaged that they are in need of a transplant is the only viable option, then the cause of the condition isn't a question. But what I'm trying to say, is by making greater awareness at the fatty liver stage, then the need for a transplant can be avoided. I remember reading somewhere and I've been searching to try and find it again, but I did read that 72% of all transplants carried out are alcohol related. The other 28% are through other causes. I'm just trying to make this an even playing field by getting the 72% down and the 28% up. I really did mean to sound offensive. Please forgive me if I've offended anyone.

Richard be very careful how you word things. Some people are far more susceptible to damage from alcohol , some of that is also due to genetics which has been proved. Also would it be a glorious world if people never needed to self mediate , through any medium , be it alcohol , drugs , food , and,any other things. Some people also have multiple reasons why they have a damaged liver , yet alcohol gets blamed. Reasons should never matter it is purely suitability, viability and need .

Spot on!

BSA-3 profile image
BSA-3 in reply to

Well, you did mate, you really did. It made my blood boil.If you need a liver then you need a liver. If you can show me one person that got up one morning and said, right, I intend becoming an alcoholic then I'll prove the Moon's made of green cheese. Alcoholism is just as much a disease as any other. Patients need support, not vilification and guilt-tripping. There is so much guilt involved with cirrhosis without implying that they don't deserve a bloody transplant. I'm sorry, Richard, but that has really pissed me off

Millie09 profile image
Millie09 in reply to BSA-3

Well said Nick. 👏👏. No one chooses to be an addict ,just like no one chooses to have diabetes, or like my poor mum who had a genetic heart valve problem that took her away from me 29 yrs ago..

Hi I totally agree about what he wrote and I think if you don’t want to report him for what he said I will because he has no right to sit in judgment he should be removed from this forum he can really hurt people when they are already feeling low in fact I am going to report him right now and see if he can be removed

Hi Donna,. Thack you for backing me up with a few other

Ive not been on the forum for a good 5 days now.i have had to stay off for a while, having a break from it all .

I support everyone on here , regardless of anyone's background, but to be singled out ( and that's what Richard was doing) labelling people made me sick. I notice he has gone very quiet now? Wonder why ??. I did not report him , i wished i had but i dont like to cause upset.

Hope your ok , and thank you.

Are you suggesting that no one with ALD should be offered transplant? My partner was diagnosed 16 years ago, at that time there was not so much info available, also when young you think you are invincible. He stopped drinking then and has not touched a drop since, I would like to think that if needed he could have the chance of a transplant.

Kristian profile image
Kristian in reply to

I think we've all sort of missed the point here. Richard isn't casting any aspertions about anyone or saying who is more deserving than others. If you need a transplant then you need a transplant irrespective of the reasons. What he's saying relates to putting more resource in place to tackle preventable or treatable causes of liver disease to reduce the demands on a system that is short on supply, i.e. livers to transplant.

There are two ways to cure a shortage, 1) increase supply or 2) reduce the demand. If there is a way of reducing demand by putting resource into treatment, help or education early on then surely that is better for everyone.

Liver disease is no different in that respect to any other. To prevent heart disease we educate about diet and exercise or treat cholesterol with medication. To prevent lung disease we educate about smoking and provide treatments to kick the habbit etc etc. How much resource goes in to those programmes? Do we not agree that more resource should be put in to treatment, education or whatever may be worthwhile to prevent, where its possible to do so, things getting to a stage where a transplant may be required? There is also no difference here whether liver disease is caused by lifestyle or a treatable illness. It makes sense to put more resource in to preventing or delaying progression. Having an MP on side to push that argument, i.e. to get that resource, is a good thing.

Anyway this is an argument for elsewhere. This is Chelle's post. Lets hope the next call has a better outcome. Good luck Chelle.

Richard I thought that was a really harsh thing to say and to stigmatise people do you need a transplant are your family sitting really worried waiting on that call unless you are going through it I don’t think you have the right to say who does and who doesn’t deserve a transplant my husband does not have alcohol related liver disease and he is very ill I do not appreciate the fact that someone like you can judge people as to what they do and don’t deserve I pray to god that you don’t have to go through needing a transplant and the stress and worry of the family I think you should think before you speak about people and their situations

in reply to dougalgromit

I wasn't stigmatising anyone, and I'm sorry but my message has become misconstrued. Kristian replied to my comment and understood what I was trying to say. It was never my intention to upset anyone, and to that end I have already made my apologises. Sorry for any upset. I have already had my transplant due to alcohol-related conditions.

Sorry to hear it was a no go, my sons first call ended the same way and it really is a strange feeling...I was kind of relieved as I didn’t feel ready but also sad it hadn’t happened at the same time. Luckily we got another call less than 48 hours later and that was the perfect one for him and he is now 15 weeks post transplant....I hope you don’t have to wait long for that second call and that the next one is the perfect one for you x

Dulux profile image

Chelle had her 2nd transplant, but in the following hours that liver didn't get going, she was placed on the super urgent list and within hours there was a viable liver available, this one is looking better and she is currently in ICU whilst they let everything stabilise, she will be slowly bought round in 2-3 days, she has received a massive amount of support especially from many on here. Just after her first call she set up a transplant page on Facebook if you wish to follow, which is simply Michelles liver transplant journey.
