Keeping it up

Hi folks, I've gone 4 days now without a drink, probably means nothing to most of you, but for me it's good, around my daughter's still, she said this is the last chance, I have to agree can't fail anymore, not sure what s happening at turning point, so basically I'm doing this on my own, but it's ok I'm a stubborn bugger, still feel slightly edgy but it's just taking one step at a time, thanks for all of your comments whether they are hard which is what I need, and positivity.

Regards Jeff x

Hi,

My last drink was three years ago and my transplant was March 2016.

Believe me when I tell you - there is life after alcohol and its just as interesting as anything you ever had before. Eventually it becomes 'the new normal' and the idea of drinking becomes increasingly a distant memory.

I was 'lucky' because I was just too ill to want a drink or tolerate the effects. Then it was a matter of survival because being listed for the transplant depended on a zero alcohol life.

Try to keep occupied and, while it lasts, enjoy the good weather. We will all be following your progress and wishing you well.

Jim

Thanks Jim, I am going to beat this, I don't even like the taste, I think it gives you a false sense of security, people like me sober ive never been violent but I can be cruel when talking, I had a wonderful lady life was good, but she couldn't take anymore, my daughter has given me a new chance and I'm not going to waste it.

Keep it up mate, the drink really is not worth it, it nearly took my life two years ago but having cirrhosis what I have I’ve turned it into a positive and now being sober and with all my knowledge about alcohol I’m now working in detox centres for the NHS. I’m 41 and for the first time in my life I’m happy. Take one day at a time my friend and them 4 days will turn into weeks months and years. Wishing you well. Rod. 👍🏻

Just from a health view point, I take vitamin B and thiamine prescribed my my GP. Withdrawal can be difficult and dangerous. But, well done. You can do this. Don't dismiss AA or similar organisations. Meeting kindred spirits is never a bad thing.

Deb

Just keep going, I hung onto the fact if I had a drink I could have died!

Get past each hurdle one at a time.

You can do it!

You not drinking for 4 days does mean a lot to us. Many of us here know how hard addiction is and how hard it is to beat. We also know given your condition that the only way your life is going to be saved is to give it up now. If it wasn't for addiction issue due to alcohol, painkillers, Tylenol, many of us wouldn't be here. We get it, good job, keep moving forward. Things will fall into place without alcohol.

I think you can see from the replies how many of us who have ‘been there’ are willing you on. If I was you, be careful at least in the short term to limit your time exposed to alcohol, be it in the company of drinking buddies or social events. Just to focus on ‘the day’ and personally AA with kindred spirits - the good kind - works for me. And as some have said, in time the obsession/desire to drink dissipates like a fog lifting and of course, clarity of mind/thought and new found health - for most - is an added incentive to change. And of course, your daughter who will be so proud of you. Best of luck...

Thanks I think a lot of people around me expect me to fail, having failed so many times before, but I'm determined, and this is it, no more poison in my body.

You are doing well Jeff. You don't need need alcohol. Believe me. I am now 6 years alcohol free. I have Cirrhosis, but my liver is stable. You can do it. If you feel the urge to have a drink, have a soft drink, that's what I did and it worked for me. Keep posting on this site, you will get tremendous support.

Hi Foxman555,

4 days is good and each and every day without is better. My husband quit drinking 2 years ago in the hospital when the doctors told him he would die if he did not quit altogether. As his wife I am happy he is still sober and doing much better, muscle is returning and he is back to getting outside and puttering in the garage, and he helped with the snow shoveling this year [we live in the northern US].

However, it does now and then anger me that he didn't do this sooner when he could have had better health now that we are retired. He had quit for several months over the years, but started drinking again and then it just blossomed into drinking too much on every occasion. It is very hard on the family because we think you care more about drinking than you do about us and what this does to us.

Keep up the good work and my best wishes are with you.

Mary

Hi Mary, it's one of those illnesses that if you don't think and understand what you are doing, it just hits you again, nobody with any sense would put their bodies through it, so many times I've said no more, my family and friends just don't believe me anymore, I'm getting help through an organisation called Turning point, I'm going to show everybody no means no, my partner has given up on me, she deserves better, hopefully after a while she might want to try again.

Best wishes Jeff

take a look at mysponsers.com

see you there!

I am 438 days sober and that site helped me do it.

It's somewhere you can chat with others in the same situation, sort of Facebook for alcoholics!
