I have got my first cold after transplant and it's truly knocking the stuffing out of me

Anyway I need to know what over the counter meds we can have post as I can't go and ask the pharmacist myself and my husband's memory is useless 😁 I am getting ready for cough and throat medicine I am really going to need that so what do you use ?

Try a hot brandy 🥃🙉

Sorry I can't offer you any help but I really hope you feel better very soon. I just wanted to say that I have been reading your posts and I think you are a inspiration.

Hope you feel better soon x

Hi there, the team in Edinburgh gave me the go-ahead to have lemsips, so ling as I don't take any other paracetamol.

I also used hot honey and lemon, which helped ease my throat.

That first cold is the worst, but at least we can fight it now.

Also, remember to tell consultant when they next take bloods, as you may have some spikes in the readings.

George

Don't know about cold but I just went through my first flu after transplant. It was awful! The flu symptoms only lasted a couple of days but the throat was really sore for over a week. A few strepsils and nurofen seem to have done the trick 😊

Hi, I have been told that I cannot take iboprofen because of the risk of kidney damage relating to taking tacrolimus?

in reply to Paulwil

I think I was told that too but wasn't sure. Just remember there was something against taking ibuprofen but don't recall anything about kidney damage. I try to avoid painkillers altogether, paracetamol never does much and I only take ibuprofen once every few months so hoping I'll be ok 🤞

Just read one of your posts, you should be around 6 months post transplant now. Everything ok with recovery?

Yes thanks. On 6 weekly visits to Kings as my bloods have been good consistently. Had a bit of hiccup in the beginning of February when I had pneumonia and sepsis. I spent 2 days in ICU but made an extremely quick recovery, I think my liver was the only bit working okay. My only negative is that I am still really unfit and dont have much stamina. How is your recovery going?

in reply to Paulwil

Everything going really well my end thank you. Like you I also had low stamina for over a year post surgery. I felt it was a bit of a vicious circle; you're unfit because you're not doing much physical activity and the lack of exercise keeps you unfit. Best thing to do is keep walking as much as you can and try to increase the distance each time. Check with your consultant if you can ride a bike. Swimming is great too if you can manage to get away for a week or 2. Swimming pools are not recommended. I felt that really helped speed up my recovery. Don't overdo it though, I rode 12 miles once and was getting pain around the liver area for a few weeks.

It took just over a year before I could get back to the gym. 2 months on, I think my fitness level is around 2/3 of what it was before falling ill. Still get some fatigue and need an afternoon nap most days but for all intents and purposes I'm now back to my old self.

I had a transplant last October. I have always been told I can take the normal maximum dose of 4g of Paracetamol per day if necessary. I was offered this the day after my transplant. Ibuprofen is a definite no. I would give your transplant co-ordinators a call.

I hope you feel better soon

As above you are pretty much okay with all the normal meds just keep the paracetamol level as low as you can, just to let you know my wife is 2 years post transplant and any illness/cold knocks her sideways keep warm keep the room well ventilated so you have clean air keep taking fluids water is best

Wish you well and hope you feel better soon

Be very careful if they give you antibiotics. Some common ones cannot be taken with tacroimus. GP's I have found are not experts on this

Already rang my transplant hospital still waiting for as call back so I will probably be better by the time they do lol

Erythramycin and ones ending ycin are the ones which are not suitable. I have taken penicillin. I hope you get a reply soon

Copious amounts of good quality (not cheap) vitamins C and D3. Plenty of hot lemon and honey does the trick.

Hi Jojo, now 18 months post transplant, I’ve had a few colds that leave me wiped out for a couple of days. Taking it easy & lemsip seems to work.

Still very tired if I sit down but am OK if I keep going. Now doing golf once a week, walking every day & a bit of keep fit all helping to get back to some sort of normality. Looking after granddaughters most tiring thing!!
