Liver pain

Hi again, I was just wondering if anybody could tell what liver ‘pain’ feels like (I know the liver has no nerves) but what it feels like and where it’s felt, I have been having almost throbbing sensations generally all over my right rib area and it’s slightly worrying me.

My ALT’s have been nov: 135 dec:83 jan:155 feb:99 and March are back in normal range which is good but I can’t get these right sided ‘pains’ out of my mind my bowels aren’t amazing at the moment either, iv read about early cirrhosis etc and that you might not know you have it and I’m terrified, I’m aware I’m probably being very over dramatic as there are a lot of very poorly people on here but never the less still worried, also under investigation for a rapid heart rate sines November, Thank you.

Hi

I also get those pains from rib area through to my back, between shoulder blades, shoulder and then around pancreas. My consultant told me there is a capsule around liver that has nerves in which when stretched gives alot of pain. I've got Nash. Hope this helps a little bit. Take care. Lynne xxxx

Hi there,

Oooh right ok I have heard about this capsule my doctor felt my abdomen to check for enlarged liver but she said it felt normal so I’m worried it’s inflamed instead, and I did have an ultrasound in January and it came back normal so I’m not sure if I have nafld or nash, thank you for your reply :-) xxxx

Fibroscan can give you a KPA score = Fibrosis and CAP score = Hepatic Steatosis or liver fat. This has gone on for a while, I'd try to get one of those done if possible. There's also private clinics that offer them. It could give you some good news or at the least let you know whats going on. The best time to get one is if your labs normalized, so you get an accurate results. Sometimes, inflammation will skew the numbers.

Hi, yes Iv heard of a fibroscan quite a lot and would really like to get one done, but I have no idea how to go about getting one or where they do them?

with respect to "liver pain" it can be quite diffuse-as Lynne says-my experience has been right front down into the lower rib to right shoulder and occasionally left. I wouldn't call it pain as such-more discomfort. I've also had "burning sensation" which feels like inflammation. It comes and goes. As far as the fibroscan is concerned-depends very much where you live. I had one about 4 years ago with the BLT road show-my GP had never heard of it at the time. Worth doing if you're feeling concerned-you'll probably have to pay sadly-£300-400.

Interesting fact.

The fibroscan was invented in the food industry to measure when soft cheese was ready. Rather than poking it with a finger or stick the wanted a machine to do it without touching it.

They then realised that it can measure the 'stiffness' of any surface, including the liver. In cirrhosis the surface become 'bobbly' and less soft to touch.

Hi, I was just wondering if you ever found out what was causing your pain? Have something similar and wondering what it could be and what I need to do. Thanks & hope things have got better.

Hiya, I never found out what was actually causing my discomfort, but I did have something called a fibroscan which tells you if your liver is damaged and how much it is damaged but I got a score of 4.9 which is really good and was told there was no sign of damage and no need to investigate further as my blood results all returned to normal aswell, so all I can say is it’s best to get a doctors appointment and ask for a blood test if you’re worried☺️ they said it’s probably a bit of ibs (sorry for the long reply) haha
