blood test of Liver Function Test report shows high reading of GGT! Should I worry...?

My current blood test of Liver Function Test report shows high reading of GGT:

Gamma Glutamyl Transferase (GGT): 123.0 (Bio. Ref. Interval 0.0 - 55.0)

Please let me know what does this high GGT mean and what medication/diet should I need to start to bring it down. Also, do I need to consult a doctor right now at this stage or I can carry on with self medication/diet.

Hi you need full investigations to see why GGT is high

There are specific liver problems that can cause this.also alcohol and some meds.just because a person consumes alcohol it should not automatically be attributed to this without further investigations.

Good luck

Do you drink alcohol? If so, the BEST thing yo can do to bring down your GGT and give your liver a respite is to STOP drinking for a period of a few weeks. Simple really.

Of course, an improved diet will help also, but medications (as far as i am aware) will not assist.

Does your doctor think it’s high? Are they worried? We are all patients here, with various illness and levels of those. We truly cannot advise you. But if you have specific illnesses we can relate too then we can share our experiences

For instance I am waiting on a second liver transplant in less than three years. Currently I can have terrible hepatic in enchalopothy. My quality of life is extremely low and now I am getting infections. Most days I have so little energy I can barely stay awake. I’m just telling you these are my issues and I’m blessed that other members are so kind and helpful to me. Im not on here a lot anymore but I am I get so much help from others suffering with similar issues. Speak with your doctor and good luck!

Cheering you on!

Hi normally if ggt is found doctors like to find out why? Often they send you for an ultrasound to see if you’ve got gallstones or fatty liver which can cause elevated levels of ggt. Being overweight or drinking alcohol excessively often the culprits. The levels you mention are high but not through the roof so I would go back to the doctor and ask for a plan of action. I’m surprised it wasn’t explained to you- actually I’m not -the number of people who come on this forum with the same story- keep in touch.
