Just found out my Liver values are really high and worried

Hi guys, I have just seen my doc and she stated my liver values are quite high and she seemed a bit worried so am having more blood tests. Does anyone know when at what level I should be concerned. My reading was at 277? I would be grateful for any advice. Thanks

Chris

No one is allowed to comment here on specifics of blood readings owing to different labs and hospitals having different range values. Also, without knowing which value is reading 277 no one could guess ... there are numerous different tests done in a set of Liver Function Tests.

Sounds like your doctor is on the ball if she is ordering follow up.

Hope you get some answers soon.

Katie

Hello Braz,

Katie is absolutely right. We don't diagnose or interpret test results.

We are a group dedicated to giving support and advice based on our own experience and knowledge gained by having either the illness ourselves or caring for someone who has.

This means that you will always have people on here who will listen to your worries and concerns and give you help and support.

As you might already know, there are lots of different reasons that someone will have liver disease, or as in your position, a possibility of a problem. Mine was through overuse of alcohol. Nobody on here is judged by the cause of their illness.

Whatever the reason for your result, or even if it turns out to have been nothing to worry about, you can learn from the British Liver Trust website how to understand the liver, diseases of the liver, how to live with liver disease and importantly, how to prevent liver disease or worsening of an existing condition.

Sometimes you can learn just by reading the various posts and the responses from other members of the group.

In the meantime, try to not worry, take good care of yourself with a healthy balanced diet, exercise, and alcohol intake within the guideline that you will find on the Trust website. However, might be a good idea, until you get the results of further tests, no alcohol at all. Please come back and let us know how you get on.

Hi Jim, thanks for the support and advice. I am having more blood done on Tues so hoping for an improvement as mine is also due to excess alcohol but I have been abstinent now for 6 weeks and intend to keep it that way. I will let you know how things go in the near future, hopefully with happy news. Many thanks

Chris,

Glad you are considering how alcohol is / can affect your health. Combined with a good diet and regular exercise you should be ok.

It was too late for me as my liver was beyond saving. Happy ending though - had a transplant in 2016 and haven't looked back.

Take care,

Jim

Normally, when alcohol starts to take it's toll on the liver you'll see an AST over ALT. Both are released when your liver cells are either injured or dying off to make new cells (apoptosis). When the value goes above the upper limit of normal, that's when it becomes more about something hurting or bothering your liver more so than your typical cell cycle. I would bet money that if you stopped drinking alcohol for a few months, your next test would be much better. Your doctor can also order a GGT test, this is very sensitive when it comes to liver damage produced by alcohol. If you give it some time away, I'm sure you will get better results.
