Liver resection planned

Hi everyone,

My 15 year old daughter had open surgery to de roof a 13 cm cyst 15 weeks ago. It has now been tested and it was found to actually be a very rare type of tumour. Cystadanoma known at MCN. They now need to do a liver resection and take over 50% of her Liver and her gall bladder. This will be done in Birmingham QE as she is now 16. Has anyone experienced this surgery? How long was the recovery? She doesn’t want to leave school so this is planned for the beginning of the 6 weeks summer holidays!

Hello first of all I'm sorry to hear your daughter is going through this.

I have had 2 liver resections and they are major surgery. My first one took almost 6 months to recover from but my 2nd one I was back at work in 10 weeks.

She will have to take it easy but it is possible for her to go back to school in 6 weeks. As long as she does no heavy lifting of bags or strenuous P.E.

Best wishes to your daughter and your family.

Hi, thanks for replying! She is doing a performing Arts course... so lots of dance 😕 I think I’m going to have to speak to the school and see if they can accommodate her if it may take 6 months to recover! Can I ask why you needed 2 resections? I’m hoping this will be her last surgery x

She's younger than I was (35) so will probably recover a lot quicker.

They will tell her to take it easy for a while after surgery as the incision is quite large.

On the plus side the liver regrows in just a few weeks :) I also had my gallbladder removed and I've had no issues without one.

I had 2 resections due to having liver cancer that keeps returning.

Best wishes to you and your daughter. If you have any more questions feel free to ask. X

We have a young boy in our Facebook group who was back in his dance class about 8 weeks after his resection 😃

Thankyou, I will have a look! I thought with her being 16 now she was out of the children’s age group x

As you say your daughter is now under adult health care at QE so stick around. Maybe BLT admin only saw the age 15 bit and didn't read on. As she's now under adult clinics etc. I am sure it is appropriate to seek support here with patients who also attend QEB.

Best wishes to you and your daughter - a hellish thing to have to go through at any age.

Thanks, yeah, Its a tricky age for it all to be happening as it would have been our preference to stay with the same surgeon who was lovely but she cant now! I'm sure they are great at QE too, but we really liked the surgeon at the children's hospital. There doesn't seem to be that many people who have had resection from what I'm finding. We will be going to chat with one of the QE guys soon x

Hi,

Unfortunately even if your daughter is under the care of adult services in the NHS, as a charity we cannot advise for anyone under the age of 18.

We do hope CLDF can help and wish her well,

Best wishes,

BLT

Hi

I have this same cyst. Dr says not cancer but also resection to remove it. I am 62 and they said I probably had this for years discovered by accident with a ct for something else. Please let me know how your daughter makes out. My surgery is April 2018
