I do remember one of the gastro consultants, whilst in hospital, saying coffee was good to drink and have noticed it mentioned here too, what is in coffee that's good for livers? Just wondering..

If you fancy reading some of the research and results of research into coffee and it's benefits on the liver there is a whole page of links to them on the British Liver Trust page at:- britishlivertrust.org.uk/?s...

Odd works on my laptop. Failing that link not working try going to the British Liver Trust main page at:- britishlivertrust.org.uk/ Then in the search box on the top right of the screen type 'coffee' in and it will bring up the page I linked to above and you should then be able to open all the individual articles.

Coffee is good and lots of studies have shown it. However I've not been able to find out why. They are not sure if caffeine or decaf makes a difference either. At least it's one kind of drink we can treat ourselves to.

Very true except I have 2 sugars in mine lol :)

I don't drink coffee. Never could. Fortunately I found a site that said green tea is good for you. I usually have decaffeinated tea and soya, but I can drink green tea. Looks like it might be worth a try.

I think soya is better than milk in porridge.

I agree G, has to be Alpro though, equally a bit of natural oestrogen at 49 is probably a good thing too :) x

I have read in several places that green tea can be toxic for your liver esp if you have liver disease. I have read black tea is good for your liver though.

I have seen the green tea and anti oxidising agents links, having tried it, it is just not tea! I really need my first coffee with my beta blockers otherwise it is nap time! so excellent work on the research, we have to believe something, although I used to believe red wine was good for me!

Must admit I'd rather drink lemon juice in water than green tea, it's one of those love/hate relationships..! I remember the tabloids saying red wine was good for you, mind you they also said smoking helps deter dementia! Erm..🙄 x

My drink of choice is earl grey tea after the first coffee of the day!.Perhaps we should sue tabloids for giving bad advice.

Decades ago I used to like port. Never keen on red wine, preferred white as it was sweeter. Always been a sweet tooth person. Almost certainly the sweet tooth got me in this situation, as I've not drank alcohol in about 36 years and even then not a big drinker, always made me feel sleepy, not good when out with friends. But it is a surprise I'm not diabetic (im not complaining) with the sugar I put in my body over the years.

I can drink green tea with food, but I will be honest I struggle with it as a drink on its own.

How many cups is good and does it matter if it's instant . Cos I don't want to be drinking wrong one lol

Gaynorlowson profile image

De Caffeinated Coffee Carcinogenic? Whilst an in-patient in hospital I thought I was doing my liver a favour by bringing in my own De caffeinated coffee - however, according to one of the experienced Nurses there it is allegedly produced using Carcingogenic (Cancer causing) products, for example, the chemicals used in paint stripper! Apparently these types of chemicals are added during production to strip out the Caffeine! Hasten to say I stopped drinking De-Caf immediately!

Coffee is absolutely good for the liver - hence the fundraising coffee mornings for the British Liver Trust.

However, I would suggest extreme caution when it comes to Green Tea. There are so many conflicting opinions, ranging from its is excellent for liver health to it is toxic for the liver and there are recorded instances of severe liver damage.

All depends on what you read - but such diversity would make me think twice about anything not prescribed.

Also, the advice that Green Tea is good for the liver may relate to a healthy. A liver which is damaged is a completely different matter and before taking anything 'natural' for liver health, I would get advice from your responsible medical team.

The British Liver Trust has advice for anyone considering complementary / alternative medicines.

Thanks Jim.

I can't actually drink coffee. Never could even as a youngster trying to join in with my friends. Not surprised about green tea most things have mixed reviews.
