Hi

I was hoping someone might have had the anti biotic Nitrofurantion for cystitis or know someone who has who has cirhossis too. I was given it yesteray and read up that it is not good for the liver though GP said it was ok as a short five day course. My LFTs are not bad at present but already after two doses I feel rough, very hot and stomach upset. I am allergic to penicillian which is better for the liver. I usually dont itch but now I am. I can contact the surgery but I dont expect anything else as everything seems to be bad for the liver.

Appreciate your help...it is a difficult road when you cant be sure of your doctors knowledge on this disease!

Nitrofurantoin has been implicated as one possible trigger for Auto-Immune Hepatitis though this has often been in people who have been treated for lengthy periods with the anti-biotic.

I don't know what access you have to your specialist (via email or phone to secretary perhaps) to ask if they have a preferred antibiotic for your UTI rather than the nitrofurantoin.

Thank you. Its hard to get to the consultant even via his secretary..the GP who prescribed this seems certain it was ok for five days maximum. I will try and call her.
