Hi I had a fibroscan but they never told me that there is a score.Look it up on the internet or better ring your specialist and ask.A fibroscan is used now instead of the painful biopsies. It will show how badly your liver is damaged and spleen and kidneys etc.

When do you see your specialist? They will tell you what's wrong and what you need to go on.In the mean time cut out all salt onions and garlic. They recommend the FOOD MAP DIET at the Austin liver clinic and of course no alcohol.Who even gave you the score? Don't stress until you find out what's going on.Good luck cathy

Cut out salt yes, but nobody ever told me about garlic and onions.

Why?

It's not something we've ever been told either - the FOD MAP or FOOD MAP diet is one that is generally used to treat inflammatory disorders particularly of the bowel such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome and isn't necessarily the right advice when dealing with liver issues.

It would be advisable to request to speak to a liver specialist dietician as dietary advice for one individual (such as in this case) might not be relevent to others or to your particular case.

The FOD MAP diet is almost a direct opposite of the dietary advice that my husband with cirrhosis was given by liver specialist dietician so do seek out your own individualised advice from a qualified dietary specialist.

All the best,

Katie

Fibroscan measures how soft your liver is by using sound waves. 10.4 puts you at F2-F3 depending on the reason behind the fibrosis. I am not sure what caused your fibrosis, i.e alcohol, bad diet, ect. I have spoke to some who had 11s, so higher than yours and their fibroscans went back to normal after a year or two. If it is alcohol, stop drinking now. If it is due to hepatic steatosis (liver fat), change diet and more exercise. You are getting near the red line, but can halt progression depending on the situation. If there is not immediate cause that stand outs like iron overload, hep c, hepatic steatosis, alcohol, auto-immune hep, then a biopsy might be warranted because the fibroscan sometimes has issues with deciphering F2 from F3. 10.4 falls into that gray zone. It is really accurate at the lower numbers under 7 and really good at the higher numbers 13+. Ultrasound would be good to rule out fat, did your fibroscan have a CAP? CAP measures the amount of fat in your liver. Biggest thing here is not to stress it can still be reversed if the issue that is insulting your liver is halted.

Hi,

Welcome to the forum.

A FibroScan is a non-invasive liver scan that can reveal any fibrosis ( stiffness) within the liver. A fibroscan can be a useful indicator, but should not be used as the only resource for making a diagnosis.

It is therefore very important to discuss your results with your own medical doctors, they are best placed to accurately interpret them for you and order more tests if needed. They can also refer you on to a liver specialist if appropriate, for further guidance and investigation.

Also with regards to diet, we would advise to discuss any new diet with your own doctors in the first instance.

We hope you find the forum a supportive place to visit,

Best wishes,

Rebecca

A fibroscan is meaningless unless the cause of the liver problem is known. The score number can fall in one range i.e fibrosis for Hep C, but another range i.e cirrhosis if you have alcoholic hepatitis for example. It is easy to find the fibroscan scale on the web, but unless the cause of the liver problem is known, then the doctors will be only able to give you a rough guide. It is really a guide as to how much liver stiffness is present in your liver i.e damage. Hope this helps :)

To add on top my comment above, MC1189 is right. The issue here is the fibroscan doesn't give you a histological report. Being a former Army Officer in the United States Army, we had a saying that applies here. If you don't know who your enemy is, you can't have a solid course of action. Same applies here, you need to know what is causing the liver damage first and foremost to be able to figure out what you need to do to treat it. Beets restore glutathoine which is the liver's largest anti-oxidant and protects the liver. Tumereic also is very good as it can cause rouge satellite cells to undergo apoptosis (mediated cell death). Eggs restore Choline and increased HDL and lower bad LDL cholesterol. Without Choline the liver can become very damaged quickly. Artichoke, has natural selenium in it. These are all foods to start looking at to help the issue until it is diagnosed. Like I said above if you do not have any immediate causes for this 10.4 fibroscan. I would believe that a biopsy would be the next step. Alcoholic Hep, or even having an elevated ALT can cause a fibroscan's numbers to be inflated. Any active inflammation can increase KPA. hepatic steatosis (liver fat) can increase KPA as-well. However, there should be a CAP score that tells you how much liver fat you have if it was the newer machine that ran the test.

One thing to rememberabout fibrosxan numbers is that they are not a definitive indicator of anything.

You don't say who recommended the test or why because that can make a huge difference.

Without other test results it tells you nothing really and can be affected by infection/inflamation if the liver

My fibroscan was 21.3 stage 4 cirrhosis. My Drs. said anything over 12.5 is Cirrhosis.

My fibro score was 27 and way off in to the red zone.. my actual liver function tests have been good, no varices since my gastroscopy last month .I stopped the alcohol as that was the cause .was told I had fatty liver on my scan in May..i eat healthy BUT I am addicted to Maltesers 🙈.. I can get through two boxes easily a day!! Not good .. I have put on weight and I don't like it .. so simple solution I need to change my habit .I'm f4 stage but any fibroscan result can be affected by meds, diet etc on what you had to eat the night before.

Hi I have a KPA of 10.5 from a Fibroscan. It says Fibro 3. I guess that is stage 3 fibrosis. Does anyone know what this means? I have met with doctors regarding this but can't seem to make any sense of it all. I don't see the specialist until January but just was wondering if anyone can help me on this one. Thank you.
