Possible Terry's/Lindsay's nails? What could this mean?

littlesaintvincent profile image

Hello everyone! I've noticed that my nail beds have become white over the recent months. I can't remember correctly when this began, but I do have a photo below of what my nails look like as of right now.

I'm not 100% sure if this is Terry's or Lindsay's nails but your guidance would be sincerely appreciated. I've heard that these kinds of nails could link towards liver provlems so I felt this community would be the best place to post.

I haven't had any serious medical problems other than a gallbladder removal surgery roughly three months ago because of fast weight loss. Health-wise, I'm feeling all right. No current symptoms other than feeling cold all the time, especially in my hands/feet, (yet that's something I've dealt with all my life).

My main concern is, do I have Terry's or Lindsay's nails; and if so, what does this mean and could this be serious?

I'm a twenty year old female, 5"4' and weigh roughly 115 lbs. I haven't had any alcohol problems in the past, I don't drink. I haven't smoked, and I eat fairly healthy. The only thing I can think of is that I don't eat much meat, but that is all that stands out if something may be "lacking" when it comes to my current diet. I take a multivitamin, B-12, B-complex, iron, and vitamin c tablet as well.

Thanks so much and I hope to hear from you soon!

Your best plan would be to go and see your GP and have a set of blood tests taken just to see if anything is going on with your liver. You have a complex medical history and a recent gall bladder operation which can influence liver functions and your doctor would be the best placed to advise you further with all your medical records in front of them. Terry's Nails is no longer used as a diagnostic tool for liver issues & from a photo it is difficult to make out whether you have Terry's Nails or not.

Sorry can't be of much more help, in this case your doctor should be able to help further after a set of Liver Function Tests.

All the best, Katie

I have them too, I find out about 15 diagnosis that makes terry nails! Doktors know nothing about it...low thyroid, anemia, B12, blood flow etc.

So these can appear with low thyroid as well? I seen it can be related to heart failure and it had me freaking out about that and liver. I had a Abdominal CT and everything from my heart and liver and gallbladder all showed normal. So I am not sure... But I do have a thyroid issues.
